For those who ride Gap Creek, I came across this last night while trying to dig up info on the trail that they have started pegging out next to Quail Trail.

Council is about to implement new measures to enable more safe and sustainable mountain biking at Mount Coot-tha. As part of our Mount Coot-tha Mountain Bike Concept Plan, Council will create more mountain bike single tracks for different skill levels, new connections to Gold Creek Reserve, as well as addressing issues created by unauthorised tracks.

Commencing next week within both the Gap Creek and Gold Creek mountain bike trail network, Council will undertake significant upgrades to existing authorised trails. There will also be upgrades to two tracks to ensure they meet modern standards and can be designated as official trails.

A number of existing unauthorised trails will be closed.

The project will include the establishment of a new authorised climbing trail and upgrades to the existing ‘Tunnel Trail’ to enable multi-use access. A black-rated cross-country track will be formalised and is proposed to be named the ‘Axe-Breaker’ trail. Additionally, the existing designated, green-rated climbing trail (Crebra Climb) will be extended to connect with the ‘Rocket Frog Trail’ to create a ‘green loop’ for junior and new riders.

The works within Gold Creek Reserve will be completed by an external contractor mid 2025 (weather permitting) while Council managed Trailcare volunteers will undertake the works in Gap Creek Reserve over the next six months.

This project is consistent with the outcomes identified in the plan and prioritises environmental preservation while enhancing the trail network's long-term sustainability to meet increasing demand for recreational mountain biking in the reserves

Have you got a map of the new trail? If they're going to run it through the fall lines, they're wasting their money.

They tried to install a hardwood bridge at the bottom creek crossing on Quail Trail years ago. When it stormed, it just blew it apart and pushed it down the creek, and the bridge was so heavy that 4 people couldn't pick it up.

No Map. In the bookface comments, BCC said a map will be available after the trails are open 😣. The tape/flags for the new green climbing trail start at the top of Skink Link and pretty much follow the contours on the east of the fire road (Quail Trail) steadily climbing at a low gradient, only leaving it to sidle around some of the spurs that form the current steep sections. Then it crosses over to the west of the fire road towards the top to link up with the little section of Rocket Frog that takes you from Quail to the road. Hope that makes sense. Based on past experience, it's going to take a while for the trail fairies to bench that amount of track.

I'm hoping that China Beach will become the new Axe Breaker trail rather than council trying to close it. Also hoping Channel 8 survives.

My guess also is that the trail marked as "Bobby Dazzler' on strava is the climbing trail they are talking about formalising.

Bobby Dazzler seems to be the trail on the west side. I haven't ridden there for years, lost interest when they started to take out all the fun features on the east side that had been there for years, and it's impossible to get a park there on Sat mornings.
