Geometron / Mojo / Nicolai G16

I got a custom frame made up from Marino bike to scratch an itch i had with the new school geo built around 29" wheels. Turns out I absolutely love it, climbs like an absolute beast and is stupidly fast and stable.

But.... I am a massive bike slut and have champagne tastes. So I sold my evil insurgent frame ....

I came accross a Geometron G16 frame on pinkbike over in Europe for a really decent price. It had a brand new front triangle and a used rear end that had all the bearings replaced. I got in contact with the bloke selling it who turned out to be Paul Shephard from geometron / mojo rising. I arranged to have an invoice sent to finalize payment of this frame.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the frame I was after was also listed on eBay in the United kingdom and it sold over the weekend before they sent me the invoice.

Paul being the legend that he is offered me a brand new Geometron g16 at the same price with a 5 year warranty. I grabbed a hope headset and seat collar off them also, which they installed and changed the decals to geometron.

The Geometron G16 is made by Nicolai but varies slightly. Slacker and and 83mm BB are the main differences.

They use an 83mm to improve tyre clearance and allow it to be built as a 27.5" or 29" bike. The geometey can be retained in either size using a couple of unique features like the mutators and ET key. I think the BB is raised slightly in 29" guise but can be lowered using offset bushings.

Frame can be run with a 216x63 shock to give 155mm rear travel or a 222x70 shock to give 175mm travel. There is a chip (ET key) where the shock mounts which flips around allowing this.

So to me seems like the bike is super versatile. I have a 216x63 shock and some 27.5 bits that I have used accross a few bikes that I will keep on this build.

I also have a steel single pivot Marino so will use the parts of that to trial this in 29er mode too.

Further down the track I'll probably grab cheap 222x70 shock and maybe even a dual crown fork for shuttles. Two bikes in one!

Cant wait to build and ride the beast.

Here's the details on the build.

Love Nicolai ! Industrial pornagraphic whale scale welds... beautiful frame.

I had a Nicolai AM (26") back around 2010, will still be on a thread here somewhere.

Yeah the welds look porn as! I cannot wait to see them in real life. I have never seen a Nicolai out and about before so will be a first for me.

So awesome. Awesomely so.

Seems like you are holding back with your build kit too. Not.
I reckon it is pretty awesome too!

Build is incredible but aside from the shock it has been on my last few bikes so nothing new there.

Frame has landed in Oz, had to fork out a couple of hundred in duty and tax but should be delivered on Monday.

I arrive back in the country on Thursday so super pumped to build and ride this beast.

Very nice... best thing about dealing with Geometron, it's that if you call them up you'll probably speak with Paul or Chris Porter and they'll happily talk bikes and set up with you. Not exactly a common experience in this day and age. Look forward to seeing the final build!

With a little (lot) of help to my jetlagged self and the use of his garage @TheAzza and i managed to get it built this evening.

This bike is seriously long. The reach is similar to my Marino but overall feels much, much longer.

I need a slightly longer rear brake hose and mech cable but is ridable as is. Still need to bled the rear brake as clean routing meant it needed to be completely disconnected.

Got a 40mm stem to go on there instead of the 50mm I just forgot to bring it.

Need to fit the chain guide and taco.

Couldn't manage remove the a part from the acs3 kit to extend the fork from 160mm to 170 so I'll send it off to nsd in the near future.

Really looking forward to hitting some trails

You say the reach is almost the same as your Marino, so what do you feel the difference is down to?

Looking good btw!

Yeah I don't really know, there are a few variables at play now that I think about it but I'm only going off feel when I quickly rode it up and down the street.

Reach on this is 520 vs 510 on the Marino.

Sta is 77 vs 78 on the Marino

BB on this is lower and possibly a little further back.

Stack height on this is a fair whack lower than the Marino.

Also running this 27.5 vs 29 on the Marino.

I only really rode around the street for a minute and am pretty jetlagged.

Will have to unpack and rebuild the Marino and compare the two a little closer when I feel more motivated.

That is one sweet looking bike. just wondering - how do you find seat riding and climbing with the reach over 500mm. Does it feel long when seated? I'm not the most flexible person so the new geometry kinds scares me.

I can't say I have spent any time riding this rig yet however on the Marino, with 510 reach (78sta) it feels super natural.

I think reach needs to be considered as part of a package, the steep seat tube angle makes it feels comfortable. To be honest it feels very similar to my previous bike which had 451mm reach (74sta).

Difference seems to be the front doesn't really wander on climbs.

From memory you are a regular rider at Lysterfield? If you see me out there, you are more than welcome to come and have a pedal and see what you think.

I'm not flexible either.

Cheers for the replies @the drizzle and @Zaf - glad it works and feel great, just looks very wrong on paper.
I know it looks odd but you don’t really need to worry about reach when seated. I’ve just gone to a ‘new geo’ rig (Trasition Sentinel) with the reach being 34mm longer than my previous bike but the effective top tube being 8mm shorter.

But its more than just that - the stack is higher and the top tube and seat tube much lower.

All combined it means that the bike is really comfortable when seated (because of the slightly shorter top tube) and i can move around on it with more freedom (longer reach) and it disappears beneath me when jumping because i now have a 170mm dropper.

Pretty cool how it all comes together.

BTW - sick bike @the drizzle . Will have to catch up with you and @TheAzza down at red hill one day

If anything it'll be better for you. Seated weight rests further forward because of the steeper seat angles, which means you don't really have to consciously lean or pull yourself forward to keep the nose weighted. As long as the ETT is sized right, everything else works fine. And like @yuley95 says, the extra room when descending is awesome. Just takes a few rides to adapt. You think you'd lose all agility but you don't really.
