Greatest moments of MTB history

Crashed out somewhere
So just thinking about this presentation I have in three weeks for my thesis pre-beginnings. Got my thinking cap on as to what I was going to show these few hundred 15-18 year olds to get them looking at the screen instead of me during the talk.

Then it hit me! MTB history. A highlight reel of the great moments of the sport.

But alas, what are they, and are they on film? or any other show moment banger that might get their attention.

  • 70s and 80s clunker drifting
  • Shaun Palmer and Nico? the 90's.
  • Steve peat winning a champs
  • Ryan leech woods section ( showing the naturalist is always good these days)
  • Eye candy, danny macaskill
  • Freeride invention: redbull rampage beginnings + Zink's 360
  • Some sort of slopestyle footage, not sure what though?
  • Sam hills world crash, amazing footage! most dope modern DH section possible??
  • Kranked 7 bicycle evolution intro- a great image to my intro part of the talk.
  • Life cycles movie trailer, has great depth and meaning, a good opening.

  • Tomac - the end of the true king of the hill and the beginning of athlete specialisation.
1991 saw a change of teams: from Yeti to Raleigh and from 7-11 to Motorola. A stronger mountain bike season culminated in UCI World Championship success in Ciocco, Italy, with Gold in XC and Silver in DH. In addition to that, Tomac won two events on his way to the UCI XC World Cup title, and added a second NORBA DH title to his 1989 win. The following year, he finished in fifth place at the DH World Championship held in Bromont, Canada, and had to settle for second place behind Switzerland's Thomas Frischknecht in the XC World Cup rankings (though there were two event wins again). An accident in which Tomac struck an errant spectator in the final event at Mount Snow, Vermont, prevented him from outscoring his rival and retaining the title.

In 1993, Tomac was the runner-up to Germany's Jürgen Beneke in the inaugural UCI Downhill World Cup and lost out to Frischknecht again in the XC rankings.[5] This was to be the last season in which Tomac would finish in the top three in the World Cup, but he continued to achieve notable results in the World Championships. In 1997, five years after his last World Championship medal, he finished second in the downhill event at Château-d'Oex in Switzerland.
  • Explosion of MTBing in the mid nineties, including Mammoth Mountain Races.

  • The emergence of enduro racing - Megavalanche and 6/12/24hr and 100k events.

Jared Graves failing un-luckily at multiple worlds champs, the taking it on his home soil! Brought a tear to my eye!

Feeling old
(only heard about this in legend and not actually seen it)

For an Aussie flavour, what about Kovarik's win at the 2002 world cup at Fort William
A winning margin of just over 14 seconds
An unforgettable run in the wet by all accounts

Don't have time at the mo to google it

In no particular order...

Ned Overend - 1990 World Championships - the first ever MTB world champion.
Tomac - of course! Drop bars at Durango!
Hans Rey - the "father" of trials
Dave Cullinan and Brian Lopes - the beginning of the BMX cross-over guys (DC also had a heart defect, but still kicked butt!)
Cedric Cracia at the Red Bull Rampage (2003?) where he won with a backflip also the following year when he almost died wearing the captain america suit, or busting serious moves on the 4 x tracks.
Dave Watson at the TDF jumping the Grupetto.
Cadel Evans on dirt!
Jason English, Jimi Willo, Gordo - 24 hr crazy dudes
Cam McCaul doing what he does
1996 Cairns Worlds

um...

+1 to pretty much everything above but can't forget Chris Akrigg vid, not really my style of riding but I think he epitomises a lot of what mountain biking is, doing whatever you want on your bike, using your environment as a canvas and your bike as a brush.

All Terrain MTB challange in Jindabyne (2001?) which turned into the Red Bull Ride (2002&3?), which perhaps aided development of Red Bull Rampage around the same time.

Suprisingly could not find footage of All Terrain MTB challenge on You Tube, but have a VHS of the last RB Ride.

2002 RB Ride footage below - course was much different to the All Terrain Challenge course and would be great if anyone could find footage of it - an event like no other at the time.
