Helmets ABC

How often doe sthis debate come up?

The simple answer is use an ANZSA approved helmet, which should be any bought locally in OZ.
Be careful with NZ, even though it is an Australian/New Zealand standard, the same sticker rule does not apply to those sold in NZ. Check out the Bell swepp advertised on T7. "For off road use only".

& the Giro Xen. Certified in NZ, not here unfortunately.:(

Just found out a new standard has been mandated, Bike shops are going to have to destroy a whole lot of helmets unless they sell them before the standard is implimented!

Don't Australian Standards require continuous batch testing?
Please don't take this as gospel, but my understanding is that for sale in Australia they must be re-tested when:
a) Any non-trivial change in design to a product takes place
b) Any significant production process or production batch changes
c) For every n units, where I think n might have been 2,500, but I couldn't tell you where this number in my head is coming from.
The AS2063 tests are prohibitively expensive for small quantities in Australia.
Also, with the new standards it will only become illegal to sell helmets not conforming to the new standards - they will still be okay for use.

I did read the AS2063 doc cover to cover about two years ago, and after reading it it really does make you understand why helmets are so expensive in Australia.

So.....

Can anyone summise what helmets WILL be affected by these changes in law ?

"off-road use only" LOL.... looks like I will be buying a new helmet soon !

At the consumer end, no, not really.
The testing is being refined to a better standard thats all, probably 99.9% of current helmets will pass with flying colours.
It may effect some stores, because once the standard is implimented, vendors (shops) need to destroy any helmet that hasn't conformed to the standard and hasn't been sold yet.

I bought a new Giro roadie helmet this week from LBS. The stickered price was $250. The same helmet at Ribble was $79.95. You cant blame people for buying from overseas.

Pretty sure that any helmet that you buy from overseas will meet Aust standards if the same model is sold here in Australia. On the box of the helmet I purchased it said all of the standards that it met.

i just enjoy living in a world that creates so much waste, by destroying things that are prefectly fine. Another perfect example being Jeep 24hr competition win a bike and have yours crushed???

my rant
better have another coffee and calm down

quiggs

the bike won't actually be crushed @ the jeep 24, it'll go to charity auction or similar.

but i take your point of course.

I certainly can't provide anything resembling a long list, but I can tell you that both the Giro Atmos and the Giro Ionos failed the new standards tests (at least initially).

It's important to understand why they state this. Road helmets have to be able to tolerate dragging across hot mix (at a certain speed equating to a certain friction coefficient). 'Off-road' aren't expected to handle this kind of slide across bitumen.

Having had all this dicsussion, maybe there's a simple product we should just bring back:

Akashra, thanks for pointing out the differeing requirements for Offroad use helmets..

I have a couple of helmets which can be used for road use.(if I ever venture onto it!)

Just considering the discounts offered,if any in regards to these new standards would be worthwhile as the helmet would only be used on the dirt.....

The standards won't really effect the helmets that much differently to how they are at the moment.
Buying a helmet now, as aposed to when the standards kick in, will not change how safe the helmet is.Its not like that new standards mark a mystical day where some helmets will become safer then others!

Australian Standards are one of the strictest in the world, Most helmets that pass, will go beyond saving your head in a accident!
Most 'On Road' Helmets will be safer then a 'Off Road' Helmet, as they're designed to deal with stronger impacts eg, head on with a car :S

Hope it helps a bit

What?? We are going to have two different helmet standards? Why on Earth would we do that? That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard! This cannot be true, seriously?

No no no, Sorry I've given the wrong impression.
Some 'Road' Helmets are designed to withstand stronger, more full blown impacts. 'Off Road' Helmets however do not need to deal with these forces (with the exception of DH etc) and therefore are often 'weaker' to more a less of a degree.
Both helmets still pass the same standards.

Do all helmets that are not sold by the changeover date have to be destroyed or just the ones that fail the new test?
