It's a fucking mixed bag and the more you build the more you repair. The better the stuff you build = the more people will want to ride it. Sad fate.
It sure is a mixed bag. Another aspect to the catch 22 is that you need other people to ride the trails to bed them in. But when they decide to ride them in the wet and trash them, you're not supposed to complain, just get back out there and patiently fix them up again ready for the next trashing. It would be easy enough to make trails totally secret, but then they would remain too loamy/loose, accumulate too much tree litter and risk growing over. But it is super awesome designing stuff that you want to ride, with the jump/drops/features being the exact size/difficulty you want to hit.
