I might be up there on the 23rd in the afternoon unsure what I'll be riding at this stage. Might be big chook laps as I think that is riding the best at the moment though, so might not work out meeting up for a pedal.

Sweet. Send me a PM if you are there on Saturday arvo and I’ll come back over from the Blue Tier Shuttle and do a lap or two with you.

I'll be up at Derby from the 29th until New Years day. Want to give Detonate a good crack. Elbow pads on

Just got back. Wore my chin guard and elbows for Detonate. Got off the bike a few times, its insane lol. 23 Stitches and Black Stump were fantastic. Black Dragon was tough also, was off the bike a few times also. Trouty is cool. Only got to do them all once though. Lucky enough to do Blue Tier and Atlas twice within 3days. Was mint the second time with rain the days before. Such an epic trail, so much fun. Huge sections with no pedalling and no brakes.

EDIT: and loved Juggernaught at Holleybank. Would love to do it again. Few great trails at Travalyn also.

Heading down with the Trance in a couple of weeks, hope to get Blue Tier and some time at Hollybank in at least. And of course the North South Track. There will though be a point at which me going off riding on my own while she wanders about odd Tasmanian towns will be frowned upon...

Juggernaut and North South track have plenty of climbing if you're not shuttling it, so be prepared :) Both are lovely descents though, juggernaut is very rocky raw trail at the top..

North South is an old friend from when I lived in Hobart several years ago. Its a great climb. Last time I did it 6 months ago I continued to the top from The Springs, a decent climb from Glenorchy, but an awesome trip back down!

Yeah I'm not impressed with this.

It will make the place horrible and i've already seen a noticeable increase in traffic evcen in small regional areas and it's not pleasant, I don't want to see more pointless growth for growths sake, all it will do is put more pressure on bushland and roads and our roads are starting to already struggle.
Yeah I agree.
Growth is good if it's genuinely needed & most importantly is slow & sustainable growth.
But Liberal (fuckwit) governments are always the same - growth, growth, growth no matter what...and don't dare question it.

They just don't think it through.

You can't have growth for the sake of growth, there first needs to be the jobs to support said growth, so investing in industry infrastructure upgrades and etc is key and the people will just naturally follow if it's all done properly and not to mention managing the urban sprawl otherwise we'd just end up like Sydney and that'll damage Tasmania's reputation and I reckon we'll find people less interested in tas if that happens.

650,000 popel! Urgh. it'll be just like Singapore! ;)

I just got back from a few days riding in Derby (which was awesome) and a drive down to Hobart (also awesome) and I don't think there's anything to worry about quite just yet. Put it this way, Scotland is the same size, is also well known for it's wilderness and has 10 times as many people.
Actually right now we're at the point where we can't cope.

Hospitals are starting to struggle, roads are starting to fill up and it's only just begun.

Yeah, I hate to say it but our healthcare is really hit & miss...and it's not keeping up.
Having a baby? ...or need an ambulance and a bit of quick ER patch-up? No worries.
But need a specialist or a non-standard scan?....you're screwed. No options. No specialists.
And if you pay for private hospital, you still end up in the public system anyway.

Public transport? Completely laughable in Launceston. I reckon Syria has a more reliable bus service. (Can't speak for Hobart).

Don't get me wrong - I'm a big fan of our tourism growth (especially the mtn bike boom) and I welcome everyone visiting to ride & tour in Tas (despite my tongue-in-cheek comments on other threads ) The tourism growth is a good thing on many levels.
But I think there is a risk that greed & dumb growth could ruin the very essence of what makes Tasmania, Tasmania.

Agree. It needs to be managed very carefully but now we're getting shit like that god awful high rise hotel, "Investors" looking to come in, build some standard box apartments profit then leave us with undesirable apartments and expensive housing.

And don't get me started on specialist Drs, god, what a mess.

Oddjob

Merry fucking Xmas to you assholes

There, fixed for it for you.

I hate to say it but if Tas wants more specialists in all fields then they need more people.

Only more people with specialist skills, not more people in general.

I’ll be sad to see it grow... Speaking as someone who’d like to move back to Hobart at some point!

Assuming you can afford a house in Hobart. Hobart is becomming expensive af and now we've got those leachy developers moving in to create ugly apartments that no one really wants.

Tourism could use some work in Derby at least, a very mixed experience there today.

I couldn’t find any decent directions to the top of the blue tier, so I stuck my head into the bike shop - was met with indifference when it became clear my partner was driving me there and not their shuttle service, and then got guilted into buying a map on a hanky - something about it supporting the trails... Met the same company at the top of blue tier and I commented on it being hard to find, and he said he didn’t want to expend energy helping people who were not paying for his shuttle. Bit of a shit attitude I thought... and I felt really peeved I’d been conned the $20 for the map thingy. Met a council dude at the bottom who confirmed the council pays for the trails and those guys don’t contribute financially.

Anyway. It’s a bit unfriendly for those wanting to rock in on their own steam. Freaking awesome trails though!! Atlas was pretty technical and brutal towards the bottom, very cool. Saw a huge tiger snake (yep, brakes work!!) and an echidna.
