Last friday I was lucky enough to be injured at work, was completely my fault and I lost the end of my right thumb, for those wondering no you will not stop a 2hp pedestal grinder with your thumb while not concentrating. im off work for atleast a week and healing time will be in the months as it took a large bit of nail with it. On the plus side ive still got my thumb, it will heal and grow back

I cant ride as i cant change gears, cant go to the gym except to so spin or run on a treadmill, even then it hurts my thumb. I cant do most things as i cant use my right hand, im fresh out of DVD's mtb mags ect

for those that have been in a similar predicament what did you do to keep sane!

Got a Facebook account? Always good for passing time...

Any hobby's that don't involve using your thumb? Write a story? haha nah I really wouldn't have a clue what there is to do. Surely there is something to do ?

It will be a while before you can use it, but is a gripshift an option? You'll be able to use that before a thumbshifter at least.

Or go singlespeed. Or just don't change gears i.e. pretend it's a singlespeed ;)

I can't help you with your quest to cure boredom, but I couldn't help but notice your username and a work related injury! HA!

Have you got a gameboy/xbox/wii/PS? Computer games cure all sorts of ailments!

I'm not riding at the moment either due to injury and i've been filming/editing videos to keep myself entertained when everyone else is riding. Still makes me wish i could get back on the bike though. Apart from that, PS2, facebook, forums, cooking (you should probably be careful with knives), changing stuff on my bike so that when i am able to ride properly it'll be ready to go :)

Assuming your running only a rear derailleur, couldn't you just swap the shifter to the other side of the handlebars?

Read a book, learn a new language, binge drink, cook, make cheese, get a hold of all 5 seasons of The Wire and get hooked on it, cultivate a heroin dependency, bake a cake, make a decent home-brew, do a sudoku, take classes in basket-weaving, hitch-hike across the country (the bandaged thumb may prove useful in this endeavour)

really, the world is your oyster...

All of which just aren't teh same without a useable thumb....

I was just about to say this cant play any console game.
cant drink because of the medication im on
GF is overseas
cant really grip anything with my hand due to bruseing so rideing even a fixie is out

Millions of species get by without an opposable thumb.
You do in 1/4" of yours and you're complaining.

Suck it up princess.

Not really, I'm kidding.

That was an absolutely top-drawer call.

Carry on.

no worries mate, you chop off the end of a finger and then 4 days later go and use it

chill out, it sucks but it gets better.

i did the middle finger of my left hand a few weeks ago, severe laceration through the fingernail, cut through 90% of the finger. it took 14 days till i was on a bike again. it was a bitch, and still is, but it isnt the worst thing that can happen.

with my time off i did a few sessions of running, hiking, one handed squash, and painstakingly (with only one hand) took apart my v10 to get it painted. not the worst way i can imagine to spend 2 weeks off work.

All i can suggest is porn just use your left hand, its more challenging .................................

Tony Iommi had the tops of all his fingers chopped off right before Black Sabbath went on a world tour and became huge. He went on to become one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Chin up buddy
