Injuries. What's your story?

I Feel your pain Flint. I copped a Tibial Plateau fracture from an off back in 2010. With the bone damage I also copped 2 crushed arteries. They fixed one artery and left the other. As part of the deal I copped a Staph infection as well.

Bottom line, 4 weeks in hospital over 2 x 2 week stints, 6 surgeries, 1 to fix artery, 1 to fix bones, 3 to wash out infection, then last one to remove the hardware. Once an area with plates etc is infected they need to remove the hardware as the infection can hide amongst the metal etc. As soon as the metal was removed the pain was instantly reduced (ie that same afternoon sitting in the day surgery ward).

I had 1 year off the bike almost to the day. Riding was the best medicine as the stronger my leg is, the better it feels. I still ride every weekend.

Long story short, my knee will never be the same. It has arthritis in it now and will need a replacement down the track they tell me. The Staph infection also ate away at the cartilage which didn't help matters. It doesn't stop me doing anything, but I just get varying levels of pain and discomfort.

If I can give you any advice, do your exercises and keep it as strong as possible. Muscle strength helps me because it seems to keep the knee joint in place better

Good luck mate. Excuse the crappy old Nokia Phone pics
Yeah that sounds nasty. Apart from the initial injury and compartment syndrome I have been pretty lucky, no other complications yet. I am looking forward to the leg feeling close to normal again. Right now the whole front of my shin is numb but I get lots of nerve pain. I reckon I am about 6 weeks away from riding single track again (real slow, wheels on the ground).

Cheers

Ended up at an Osteopath (she was mega cute too, 90 min consult, mmm). Wasn't a torn lat muscle, was a displaced rib, fuck you useless physio. The moment she popped it in place, ahhhhhhh. Went for a run last night and could use my arms. Going to try a ride this weekend.
got back on the bike today, did a lap of the comm games track at Lystie, felt good to scare myself stupid a few times on the switchbacks.

running definitely helped keep the fitness up, and sprinting feels easier now. times are only off by 5%.

zero back issues

followup osteo appointment. bit rough being told by a hot chick the grip in my dominant hand isn't great (all those teenage years training for nothing), and weaker then left hand.

weak grip leading to me compensating with arms/shoulder, lat muscle is overworked and getting damaged on the bike

stirk, pink doodle, I await the hand grip jokes. just make em good ones

On sunday i managed to go over the bars in a rock garden and slam my hip on a rock, definitely wasn't going to be able to keep riding, so my mate took both bikes down while i had a go at walking up the track to the shuttle road. About 50m in I gave up after feeling the bone in my hip do something weird and the pain became too much.

Another guy finally came down the trail and gave me a hand supporting me up the trail to the top. While waiting at the top they had a go at loading me into the troopy but the pain was way too much, almost passed out so they put me back down and got an ambo sent out.

Couple of hours later I had xray results showing a broken pelvis. So now i've got 6 weeks on crutches and also had to cancel a planned shoulder reconstruction on tuesday.

Pretty bummed out about the whole thing, going to be a lot of time off work/riding by the time i get shoulder operation sorted also. Any suggestions on things to keep myself entertained? Sitting around watching tv shows all day isn't doing much for me ha.

Jesus Jono, unlucky fall. stay away from daytime tv. i went mad after 4 days and walked to the closest bus stop and went work when i did my shoulder. Work ain't great but it's better than daytime tv.

hope your recovery is quick and complete.

Unfortunately i can't even live in my own house because i can't climb the stairs, so i'm staying with my parents about 2 hours from melbourne/work. Looks like there'll no going back to work until i can climb a stair case.

I however am very normal. Trust me.
Broken pelvis is an epic injury (not in a good way), takes a lot of force to do that!

Hows the sleeping going, what position is best?

Bugger. I too fractured my tibial plateau at the beginning of the year. It's got 8 screws and a plate holding everything together. The prognosis at the time of injury was pretty negative and included "certain arthritis" and "possible knee replacement". This did not put me in a great frame of mind during the initial recovery phase. I had it repaired through the public system as there was no private theater time (or specialists) available at the time. I was able to see a private specialist for post-op (although that took 10 weeks to get to see him). When I did at 10 weeks after the injury he said everything looked great and that I should start weight-bearing as the leg would permit (I had been on crutches and a brace up until that time). The next day I was able to dispense with the crutches and have been walking carefully on it ever since. I was also able to start riding the indoor trainer and pretty much immediately got back on the MTB for cruising around on the bike paths.

I'm at around 16 weeks since the injury and other than slightly less range of motion than my other leg, things feel pretty good. Indeed I'm getting no knee pain or aches and have been able to put in some decent offroad kms.

I'm pretty hopeful that arthritis will not be inevitable, but did yours feel good at the start and gradually crap out? The riding certainly makes it feel much more normal, but I don't want to wear my knee out prematurely.

OA knee specialist here, the only reliable garantee for knee OA, is a previous serious knee injury, you are going to have knee OA, how bad, really depends on a bit of luck and how you treat your knee.

What's the current wisdom on how to best look after your knee? A number of years ago I remember reading some studies where walking (low impact) was the only positively beneficial activity and that cycling was neither good nor bad provided your bike setup and technique was A1.

I more specialise in knees once they're caput. The degeneration once an injury occurs is complex and multifaceted, I've never seen any evidence to show the declined can be attenuated, the rate of decline maybe, but there is such a large element of individuality and luck involved.

The best acitivity is the one you enjoy doing that doesn't cause aggravation, fluffy answer, otherwise you and 99.99% of people don't stick to it.

Strength training is paramount, but as physios have little knowledge in exercise prescription this generally doesn't occur, or at least in the past. Squats, unilateral leg press, lunges but never open chain exercises like knee extension. Using real weight, we have 70+ year olds pressing 200+kg with single legs... symptom free.
Proprioceptive training, unilateral balance tasks, single leg jumps (more high end rehab), that sort of thing.
Activity is the most important thing, cycling is great, hence why so many runners turn to cycling once every run tends cause aggravation. But spnning is essentially as it results in less sheering load.

The biggest issue is as you age, you do less acitivty, leg strength declines, symtpoms get worse, activity declines further, suddenly you have a range of comorbidities from a single bad knee. Now your well over weight, leg strength is shit and your booked in for a knee replacement.

Yeah pretty much went full body weight from a few metres up onto a rock on my hip.

Sleeping isn't too bad, just have to lay completely still, always move in my sleep without realising and wake myself up. Just lay flat on my back, luckily the break runs from the point of my hip inwards so laying on my back isn't too painful.
