Injuries. What's your story?

Over 9 years I've gained a lot of cuts/scars on my legs, done an AC joint, a few finger dislocations- all entertaining at the time but nothing really to speak of.
Yesterday we went to the You Yangs and heard our riding buddy bite the dust on rocks on track 14. I actually heard his shoulder break on impact on the basalt! It was a bit unpleasant and the graze was worse. Nasty nasty graze.
What's your story?

Older breaks: neck, collar bone and numerous fingers.
Half my face grazed off on gravel back in the day. Nothing much in the last few years, but a bit of bark off and banged up hip from Buller on the weekend.

my mates son fared worse.

List too long, your usual sprained/fractured finger, knuckles, hand, wrist, ribs, shoulder and topped off with a grade 3 shoulder AC joint separation.

I wear more protection now days than I ever did; just can't risk it anymore but I don't want to water down the riding. Spent some money on a skills weekend was one of the best things I did. Crash less now :)

Like most of us I've had my fair amount of cuts and scrapes but also had a fair off at the you yangs a couple of years ago. 19 stitches on my left knee. Cost me 3 weeks wages and an operation. Worst thing is I work in an emergency department so all my work mates gave me shit for not wearing pads. Now I always wear my knee pads and sometimes if it's a cool day I wear lightweight armour. I just can't afford the time off work. I often ride alone and have to ride to and from Little river train station.
I'm always surprised how many trail riders don't pad up at the You Yangs but then most people get to drive there. Hope your mate heals up quickly.

I had a stack 2 weeks ago. Went to go off a jump had no speed landed on top of rutted out table top front wheel in knuckle of landing stem hit me about an inch from my dick in about where ovaries would be. Had a big bruise that went on my stump and size of a palm on area directly hit. Now there is a massive lump under the skin about the size of a kinder egg toy capsule that hurt like hell so i finally decided i should see a doctor so to be continued..... :yield:

Going back into the hospital today to have my Philly collar removed. Crashed head on into a tree on Friday 21st of last month. Had a sore neck afterwards so they sent me to the hospital to give me the all clear. X-ray was a bit worrying but CT came up fine.

Wrote off a helmet and a front triangle. Good thing I was wearing a neck brace, they're so comfy compared to cervical collars.

Lost the front end going down One Tree Hill in Bendigo on Sunday. Landed on my face. Pretty bad concussion, still went to work on Monday as it was a better option than being at home with feral children.

I think I've had about three or four concussions over the last 15 years, shitloads of grazes and a couple of sprained wrists and cracked or bruised ribs.

I had 5 stitches in my leg when I came off my BMX when I was 9.

Usual heaps of bruises, cuts, scrapes etc.
About 2003 broke my right pinkie going over the bars.
Back in 2005 knocked myself unconscious at Lithgow preparing for the National that year. Mucked up the Generation Gap.
2010 broke my back hitting a redgum in Castle Hill. Broke the transverse process in my L1, L2, L3, L4.

Over the bars off a jump a couple of weeks ago, cracked pelvis, cracked coccyx and cracked L5 vertebra.
Now lying on the couch bored out of my brain! Without a doubt the worst injury I have sustained since taking up mtb 2 years ago.

Heaps of bruises, grazes etc. One or two massive offs with headaches, but the worst one was a dead stop from 25k's, over the bars into the ground this year in June, which resulted in a grade 3 ACL in my right shoulder, and a fair amount of pain in both wrists.

it still isn't right either nearly 6 months later!

A couple years ago I went over the handle bars at the top of a pretty high drop off, I landed at the bottom of it and slightly to the left, fell amongst the biggest pile of blackberries ever. I was covered in thorns, cuts all over and my left wrist was hurting pretty bad (so was my ego).

Then I had to get back to the car. So I tried to ride back to the car but could only use my right hand to steer/brake. I picked up too much speed on a slight decline and grabbed the front brake too hard and went over the handle bars again and banged myself up even more. Went home thinking I had just sprained my wrist but the next day went for x-rays and it was fractured in 3 spots.

x1 femur
x1 fibula
x2 radius
x1 scaffiod
x1 phalange (feakin pinky)
x2 phalanged (toes - rock strike)
x2 dislocated phalanges
x1 dislocated patella
x2 ribs
x2 AC seperations (grades 2&3)
x1 lumbar vertibrae

Haven't had a serious stack since 2010, shortly after getting my Nomad and getting too over-confident with it's 160mm of travel goodness at the You Yangs on a rocky section of Turbulence. It was literally the day before I was due to head to Bali for a week of hiking around volcanoes. Had to postpone the trip as I couldn't walk for 2 days due to hip pain (came down pretty hard on right hand side). Said trip instead became a week of sitting beside a pool while people brought me beers and food. It ended up being the most relaxing holiday I've ever had, and I've since re-evaluated holidays such that they contain mostly laying beside pools and poolside eating/reading/sleeping.

Anyway ... here's the gratuitous hip/arse/grazed arm shot. No broken bones thankfully, so I'm doing better than a lot of folk here. But the nerve pain was bad enough they gave me oxy, and it did fuck all. I still have zero tactile sensation where most of the bruise in this picture is - even today. Thankfully I still have tactile sensation where the rest of the bruise was i.e. junk - thought I'd spare you all that photo:

A half day DH lesson at Whistler was the best money I've spent in this sport, and it's gotten me out of any serious injuries since.

Fuck me ! You win

From riding, 2 ribs, twice for the left clavicle, one grade 2 AC with step, left scaphoid, humerous

For lifetime of stupidity , add 3 radiuses, 2 ulnas, 1 more rib, patella, coccyx.

Gotta say, ground hardness has a whole lot to do with injury severity - flat rock OTB broke the scaphoid, the first clavicle and the AC were either going to or coming back from Mtb - fucking hate concrete !

20+ years of on/off riding and racing motorbikes, mostly road racing. I've actually lost count, but my doctor used to have a draw allocated rather than a file, and I can set off metal detectors. ......and I just bought a DH bike....woohoo! I don't regret any of it except the financial costs and burdens it has put on my wife and family over the years, which is why I'm happy to pay for injury insurance these days. :D

A few years ago I was riding with group mates at Smithies in Cairns.
Amoung the group was a noob, a big strapping A type personality built like an AFL forward, super fit, just not an MTBer.
We came to the drop now known as Rodea drop on the world XC course. back then it was a vertical drop of 2 meters+ with a small transition at the bottom unlike the drop/roll off it is now. After getting some brief instruction said noob rolled off it only to have his weight to far rear ward so he looped out and landed on his back as he hit the transition. Nothing hurt except his pride.
A couple of weeks later the same group was riding the same loop. I must confess to not riding off that drop anymore at the time, quite frankly I did not like the feeling of dropping head down vertically before the transition so I took the B line.
As I head to the B line I see riders 1 and 2 drop off the edge and just catch the noob out of the corner of my eye as he heads off. A split second later follows a very nasty thump followed by cries of "oh shit"
When I get there noob is lying on his side barely conscious with his helmet split clean in half holding his neck.
This time he has had his weight to far forward and pole driven vertically head first in to the ground from 3.5 meters doing 20 kph
After he catches his breath he claims he is ok and just needs to rest and tells us to go on with the ride. He is clearly not ok. I offer to get my 4x4 in to pull him out, he refuses. We compromise and walk him back to the car park. By the time we get there he is barely conscious, in shock and just managing to shuffle every few steps before stopping.
His girlfriend comes out to take him home.
Two days later my mate rings to say he is in hospital with 9!! Yes 9 neck fractures.
Scary shit, still brings goose bumps thinking how close he came to death or paraplegia.
Our wives/girlfriends gave us shit for letting him walk out, and in retrospect it was wrong.
however, the guy who crashed was an emergency medicine specialist at Cairns Base hospital and one of the other riders was also a doctor. My self ( a cabinetmaker) and my mate (a chippie) hardly felt we could contradict them.
He made a full recovery but ever since I have never ever tried to encourage any rider with me to attempt anything they remotely baulk at.

Gee's this is going to be hard to remember:

Left elbow 7 stitches.
Right elbow 5 stitches.
Left elbow (2nd time) 9 stitches
Right elbow (2nd time) 4 stitches
Dislocated both thumbs at least two or three times?
left elbow (third time lucky) 6 stitches
Left knee 17 stitches - first ride back - split the wound open, got infected. Couple of days in hospital.
Left ankle 5 bones broken (dump run tambo)
First ride back after above and long time in moonboot - left ankle 4 broken bones (dump run tambo)
Little pinky right hand dislocated (same incident as above)
More time in moonboot - and (touch a fucken big lump of wood) - no major's since.

Forgot to add the most painful - took a large lump of bark of the right arse cheek (going back 15 years ago or so) - mate patched it up in carpark at Toohey Forest (brissie) - not a good place to bear your arse at night (ask a local). Got infected - a week or so later the Doc offers me a local before the nurse cleaned it out. Dumb arse says 'nah, she'll be right'. I bit the pillow that day.

At 50 you reckon a bloke would have a reasonable sense of self preservation - at least according to the Minister for War & Finance.

That's some impressive bruising, don't let anyone tell you any different nerve pain is a lot worse than periosteum pain - immobilise the bone pain goes, nerve pain = unrelenting life destroying hell.

Fuck me ! You win
Not likely, most was back in the 90's, brakes didn't work, suspension didn't work, DH was a real sport back then, we raced in lycra... miss the old days. Most happened it a few big crashes where multiple bones broke.

Strangely enough I've not had stitches since I was a toddler, always raced in dianese, jawry... time to invest in some descrete elbow amd knee pads - presuming that's not through them?
