Injuries. What's your story?

I think with the rotator cuff, surgery really is the option to take from what I've read.

It's just the months off doing none of the things I like. I suppose it's enough time to dust off the Spanish again...
Being bailed up sucks! You must have savage cabin fever. Have you considered a new hobby in the short term? Chess maybe?

Is it ok to laugh at the torn ball sack?

Needlepoint or macrame are looking choice, but they have pointy bits on them so I'm risking impalement.

And having also had the same ball sack injury as a child I'm sure we can laugh at it for sure!

I broke my back yesterday!!
Healing vibes!

I'm 4 months post fracturing T6 and T8. Unfortunately I broke the "load bearing" vertebral bodies which have taken a long time to recover from. I spent 6 weeks in a full body brace, that was super shit. I'm back on the bike now, but mostly just riding on the road and some very slow single track.

Every day I wake up I thank my lucky stars I can still move my legs. #nobaddays

Jeebuz mate, that is proper shit!

I feel like I got as lucky as a guy can get with a spinal fracture. T4 is apparently one of the lesser moved bones so doesn't impair my mobility much, and being fractures in the stabilisers I don't have anywhere near the healing to do that you did/do.

Puts it all into perspective, I'll tell wifey your story and she'll be sure to let me go riding on the weekend

Walks the walk
Yeah the back shit is gnarly! I squished a disc about 20 years ago basically from sedentary lifestyle and it was recurring at differring levels for years. I'll spruik the strength exercise again, I have not had a sore enough back to stop me doing something since about 4 months into the exercise regime. When it does tweak out (mostly when I hop on the useless wooden toy) it recovers super fast.

My shoulder would dislocate if I farted in the end so surgery was the answer as physio wasn't cutting it. Got a very reputable surgeon on my private health cover and it was really quite successful.

I heard on the radio about some new research for tennis elbow, cutting the skin around the site causes an influx of healing to the area and it will start healing the tennis elbow while it's there! Apparently immune response to skin is much more aggressive than to an injury like tennis elbow. I was a bit wowed.

Interestingly the second opinion I received today on the shoulder is a decidedly different position.

This is another orthopaedic surgeon who specialises in shoulders. He was not recommending surgery at this stage but can't rule it out.

The labral tear is still there but the pain and lack of mobility is from a small fracture in the clavicle. Doesn't need treatment or surgery and so I'm to leave that, just need some physical therapy and to rest / use it if that makes sense.

Might need surgery down the track but currently it's still swollen and has fluid at the site.

His view on recovery in 3-6 months not 9 so it looks like I may not have to slit my own wrists in frustration.

Definitely a more palatable POV than before.

Shoulder injuries suck. From my experience though if you do the rehab properly (including rest as per doctors orders where applicable), you often end up bouncing back stronger. The harder barrier to overcome though is the mental barrier which seems to take much longer. Good luck with it!

Unfortunately I've had some experience of taking an enforced break due to injury. I just have to sit it out and thankfully it's winter. The only other period I detest riding in is early summer so hopefully I'm able to ride before spring.

What's so bad about early summer?
Loads of flies. It's only by mid / late summer that they've died down.at least that's what I find.

The temperature isn't too bad (especially if one rides early enough) but I just find the flies in certain locations are just a huge annoyance. I know, first world issues.

And right now I'd be happy to ride with flies rather than sit here with a duff shoulder, which I've now found has an almost full thickness long head bicep tendon tear.

So I had an appointment with a specialist yesterday, it seems this is going to be a much longer road than initially eluded to.

3 months till I can drive
6 months till I can work (plumber)
12 months till I can ride MTB (wtf!)

I'm ever the optimist though and he said they were rough guides given the location, the nature of the fractures and my age. If I watch a bunch of wolverine and Deadpool movies I should heal quicker though, right?

This has kinda put the wind up me a bit, I'm pretty mobile and don't have massive issues with the pain so my body isn't screaming at me to sit still. I'm already going a bit bonkers sitting around the last 3 weeks, that's probably not going to get better as the weather improves I imagine.

Plans at this stage are to play with bikes as much as possible, spend a bunch of time on the trainer, volunteer at events, and live out my riding vicariously through the wife and kids. I know I'm not the first person to have a setback like this, but it's a first for me so I'm not stoked about it. Hopefully I'll bounce out the other end swinging.

I always use these periods of abundant free time to try my hand at a new hobby hiking, photography, drone racing, anything that you've had a passing interest in but no time to pursue.

That's some challenging news to take. Everyone is different so you may heal up faster or slower depending on a variety of factors.

Is the work situation ok? Riding bikes is fun but of you can't work for an extended period are you covered for that?

Of you're off for that long then it's definitely good to have another outlet. I find I tend to switch off the bikes if I can't ride them. It's just too frustrating to see all the videos and posts of the thing you love but can't do at the moment.

Hope you're staying sane.

An update.
Got a 3rd opinion from the surgeon I should have seen first but for some reason thought he only did knees and ankles.

It's worse than I thought and needs immediate attention to reattach the long head bicep tendon to my humerus. If it's left too long then you lose mobility and it needs to be severed to prevent it from tearing again.
Still have the labral tear and supraspinatus tendon tear is full / complete.

I trust him as he recommended not to have surgery for a hamstring repair I wanted that was left too long for an optimal outcome.

So, I'm now 2 weeks post surgery on Saturday. It took almost 4 hours such was the damage. It's driving me crazy already and it'll be Xmas if I'm lucky before I'm on a trail.

Folks, take care of your shoulders. And your hips too given its a similar joint structure.

I dunno about switching off bikes, I'm kinda geared towards more or less having bikes on the brain whenever I'm not sleeping. Just hoping I can channel that a bit, I realistically probably have 40% plus of my fun digging up parts and working on bikes so it shouldn't be a big ask to ramp that up.

Work has been great so far, I work for a friend. He's paid me the last 3 weeks without using any sick or annual but he can't keep doing that. I've got roughly a month of sick and annual coming now so a little bit of time to suss out what I'm doing short term. Long term I want to go back and finish the apprenticeship, he's happy to have me back when I'm able bodied again. Short term I was thinking of applying to work at a bike shop, preferably in the workshop. Or as a last resort, go back to my old technician job.

At least I've avoided surgery I guess. And I'm walking. And I'm not in agony all day (night time is shit though). Always look on the bright side of life?

So did I read that right, you're going back in for another chop up? That's some pretty shit news, How'd you go coming out of the last one? My knee was shit post op, I can't imagine a shoulder would fare any better

That's a result that you're covered at work so far. It's got to be a load off.

I went in for surgery almost 2 weeks ago and have the post surgery inspection tomorrow. So now just rehab and pain. I'm told the outcomes are very good given the life I want to lead and what's been done.

Don't get me started on the sleeping either.. last time I was this tired my kids were in nappies.

My surgeries have been.
Ankle - ORIF probably about 8/10 and the final two points are down to slight numbness in a couple of toes. Strength, range of motion are all 9/10.

Right hand - Ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction. 6/10. It works, Il never be a hand model again and it's sore / gets fatigue in certain situations (playing the saxophone)

Right hand - Pins repairing two broken bones. 9/10.
Never gives me an issue in any circumstances. I expect arthritis in that hand in years to come though.

I always do the physiotherapy as instructed so expect this one to come good but I'm told shoulders are very difficult and painful given the role they have to play. The online videos for rotator cuff injury repair and biceps tendon repair can be confronting.

One day at a time, and keep positive.

Change of pace from some of the nasty injuries above- my most recent one was..... rotor burn! Fairly stupid crash over the bars after a lot of descending (was at Whistler) and using a lot of rear brake (went through a set of sintered pads on the rear in 5 days...) and somehow the bike landed on me and the rear rotor kissed my leg. Was a pretty nasty blister for a couple days, which turned into a nasty wound as it kept getting mud/dirt in it.
