Iron Torathon!!

The Iron Torathon is back for 2024!!

7th of December we will descend on the Dial Range to see how many laps of Iron Tor we can do in 24hrs to raise money to help fund the Penguin MTB Park redevelopment.
This year I am going to challenge myself to beat my previous best of 5.5 laps and try to get at least 7 laps in. That's around 84km and 2,800m of vert if I can do it. 😬

If anyone would be so kind to make a donation they can so below.👍
Streddaz Iron Torathon Challenge

Well, the Iron Torathon is done and dusted and I beat my PB of 5.5 laps and my goal of 7 laps, managing to rack up 8 in total.
As usual it wasn’t all smooth sailing. I headed out with a risky move of running the XC wheels for better climb and paid for that choice on the first lap by smacking a dislodged rock in the middle of the trail on the my first Iron Tor descent and flatted both tyres.😫
One sealed but the other didn’t so I carefully rolled/pushed back to the start and fitted my enduro wheels. (because I kind of knew this was going to happen)
After set off on my second lap and it started raining and the next two laps were in the rain. Changed my jersey for a clean, dry one at the beginning of my 4th lap. Legs weren’t feeling that great and I was wondering if I’d make it. Stopped in for a lunch break at the end of my 4th and had a good rest. Legs felt better on my fifth lap and didn’t really get any worse for the rest of my ride. Got into my 6th and 7th and was feeling reasonably good, then waited for the leaders to come in and rode my and their final lap together, and completed my 8th lap.
The two top riders did 10 laps each and both of them had recently completed the Tassie Gift bike packing race, so they were in fine form.
Andrew Klees completed his 10 laps on his Brother Cycles hard tail, that he rode the Tassie Gift on. He had fitted a 27.5 rear wheel to slacken the head angle, custom carbon fibre mudguards with integrated storage that he made himself and it runs a 14 speed Rohloff hub. Not the bike you would often see on the Tor.

So far we have raised over $2800, and donations are still open.😉

I'm going to see if I can do 10 laps this year. 😬

If you would like to make a contribution to the redevelopment of the Penguin MTB Park you can do so below.

Another Iron Torathon run and done on the weekend.

We ended up with some great weather and had a good turnout.

The winner for the most laps was Wes Howell with 9 laps (98km/3,618m) for the men and Jayne Grubits with 3 laps.

45 lap completed for the meat bikes and 11 on the Ebikes

7 Monty laps with the most from my wife Selina at 3 and just one Ebike lap

I was still trying to get over this flu like thing I had all week so wasn't that fit but managed 5 laps.

What's an Iron Torathon without some issues and I have a rear tyre that lost pressure on two descents or no apparent reason but didn't go dead flat thankfully.
Had a massive off when I had a bit of a brain fade and tried an inside line on a flat corner that I never take and the XC tyre I had on the front let go and I made a mess of my knee. I was actually surprised that's all I did considering I would have been doing close to 30kph at the time. 😬

Slept nearly half of Sunday, so I think I pushed myself a bit too much when not 100% but I was a good day out on two wheels.

Do you make the trophies again @Stredda? They look pretty cool.

Sucks about the knee. Hopefully it's just a lot of claret and not a lot of damage.

As in do I make a new trophy for each Iron Torathon or do I still make trophies in general?

The Iron Torathon Trophy is a perpetual trophy and I just add new name plaques for each year. I'll probably make another when I have no more room for the plaques, but that's a few years down the track.

Yes, if someone want's a trophy, I still make them.
I recently made a set of trophies for the mine rescue "Deflated Team" award.

I think my knee will be fine, it just a little sore but fine to walk on. I did have to dig out a piece of wood from one of those wounds. 😬

I also went up to the tropical north of Tassie and did a couple of laps of the Iron Torathon. That is a great track. Was quite warm now the weather has changed and it's cold

Good to meet you in person Damo.

Yes, we were fortunate with the weather. Sunday was four season in one day, we had hail and all!
Yes good to meet you Chris and have a chat in person and ride some great northern trails.

Are they holding a round of the Tas Gravity Enduro there soon? and do they use the Iron Tor descent?

Yep, 17th and 18th of January Tas Gravity is coming to Penguin and yes, Iron Tor will be a stage. Should be awesome!
