But as Bayley backed off the wheel of French by some five metres, French pounced on his more favoured component to take off a long way from home, taking the second heat and the national title.
"It's really good that French rode well, he normally rides crap," Bayley said shortly after the race.
"He is always fast, but his tactics let him down sometimes, so it is good to see him riding well," he added.
