Little Things You Hate

Windows 11.

And it’s not even my own machine - it’s a work computer and it’s a fucking disaster. I reckon I lose a day a week at least to IT fuckery, and it’s not the IT peeps fault,

Not sure why anyone thinks putting every single keystroke onto an MS server and feeding an MS AI was a good idea.

Fully agree. W11 is misery. The centre start button and being pestered by Copilot along with other vendors AI faff that they are pushing hard since they have sunk huge chunks of money into it and need a ROI.

Odd how corporates run things in the background to keep an firm eye on how and where you might send corporate data in the name of security. Then also seem totally fine to have Copilot sniffing every M$ application phoning home in the name of AI learning.

Forcing a hardware 'upgrade' to newer W11 compatible machines is also another rort.

It’s not so much a rort as a deliberate strategy to ensure AI oversight of everything everyone does. It’s not not scary…

My iMac is 10 years old and on a 3 versions old OS, and I’m on an iPhone 12 - last apple products ill own and Ubuntu from now…

A couple of days into my first trip to Japan i has my first encounter. I was at Hakuba47 ski area, in the rest station at the top of the gondola. I had just completed a lunch time dump without using the shower feature of the toilet. Up to this point I hadn't been in the time/space to observe one. Friends who provided tips only mentioned the heated toilet seats not the shower. There i was as fresh as one can be without using the shower and wanting to flush away my waste...but which button on this control panel is the flush button? Hmmmm....I am going to guess the one with the image that looks like a water spout. Oh shit! That is flushing up at me!!! I spread flat against the stall wall as the shower jet blasted the back of the stall door. I quickly slammed the lid down and there it was. A plain old chrome lever for flushing the toilet.

I rejoined my brother and told him about this misadventure. He didn't believe me! So as little later we called into the toilets at the top of goryu gondola and he decided to give it a whirl. As he leapt back out of the stall the jet of water shot out into the middle of the toilet, about 2 metres from the toilet!

These are tools nit toys folks and one must be cautious when using them.
Oh Jeezuz H Christ, that was you...it looked like a fucking grim ass crime scene that even (Sir) Gary Oldman would cringe at.

So many good good times in Hakuba apart from that one moment.

Sure, selling shiny new stuff has always been a strategy.

Your second point of old hardware still being useful takes away that need to upgrade so they have to push it along a bit harder. If we could believe that new hardware with W11 would be secure then maybe, but the track record isn't promising.

My desktop is vintage 2012 and my crusty old Dell predates that one by another few years. Both run Mint and AI doesn't beg to tell me the backstory of anything that I might look at. The Dell struggles a bit but the desktop is still mighty quick for an obsolete old machine.

I've got a MSI "gaming" laptop that I bought in 2011. I put W10 on it a while back. Mostly I just use it to connect to the TV to watch the DH World Cups.

But it also struggles a fair bit, takes about 3-4 restarts below it is usable and it is mightily slow those first few restarts. I think I need to save all my personal data and give it a full disc wipe and start again...

A disc wipe and starting again would have to help. Windows does get a bit more cluttered and slower as time rolls on.

My old Dell has been sitting at the bottom of a draw for a while. I don't need much out of it except some light web browsing and use it with the telescope occasionally. It is way past its use by date but it doesn't need to work too hard anyhow.

Swapping out a mechanical HDD for an SSD makes a big difference along with a bit more RAM.

I felt like I was wasting my life doom scrolling though my phone on Instagram & Facebook, so early September I simply logged out. I told some people I'm in regular contact with on those platforms to call, text or whatsapp me instead, as obviously I'm not on there. Little thing I hate...some of those people are sending me links to things on Instagram & Facebook 😵‍💫 They've missed the point haven't they?

Also after my social media hiatus I think I've been more conscious about social interaction and conversation. A little thing I hate is the MIL's idea of a "conversation" with me - this is the extent of the two conversations the other day...

MIL: Hey Richie, guess what?
Me: What?
MIL: I'm up to level 7,000 on Candy Crush!
Me: Ah OK....cool (for the record I've never even looked at Candy Crush yet alone played so why the eff would I care)

MIL: Hey Richie, don't ever become an old man...
Me: Sorry? What do you mean by that?
MIL: Well, I went to my committee meeting and this old man (blah blah blah he did this, he did that, he looked at me the wrong way etc etc...this went on for 5 mins). He's an idiot etc.
Me: Ah OK (honestly, I couldn't even be bothered saying anything. He's probably an OK bloke. I wonder if he's good on a beer?)
