Little Things You Hate

Anybody ever heard of black hairy tongue? It's such a rare side effect to antibiotics my dentist wanted to take photos. It's completely harmless and goes away in about 3 months, but bugger me it looks weird.

This sounds like something that someone might develop after a huge weekend of tossing salads.

The really skilled tradesmen are mostly aligned with one or two very good builders who will keep them busy all year round.

They're doing the new builds and high end renovations with good architects and will never come out and quote on small jobs.

Of those remaining it's often the old semi-retired guys without a website who have the attention to detail, hence they're hard to find.
The thing that surprised (and attracts) me most about that island is the lack of size.

So, as Tubbsy says, the good ones are busy until they retire, and the shit ones don't have to care. They have a captive market because people just want shit done and there's a lack of options.

Wasn't sure whether to put this here, on the "Parts & Shit" section or in the Roaderburn bit, but here seems to fit best. Fucking Campagnolo & Magura. Had a bike in the workshop last week (it's taken me until now to cool down enough to post) with Campag disc brakes, which were developed with strong input from Magura. In quite typical and very annoying Magura fashion, the bleed ports on the lever and caliper use different threads, but I've usually had enough adaptors to make shit work. Not so with Campag. My supposedly "universal" bleed kit at work has a stack of different adaptor tips to suit various brakes, but not one fits the Campag caliper port! Even the factory-issue, unopened until I found it in a dark corner Campag bleed kit doesn't have the right thread tips! Just to be sure I wasn't fucking things up, I tried swapping the lever & caliper port plugs; they are definitely not the same thread!

People shouldn't use a circular disc sander across the grain of weatherboards like that
Tell him I said he is a dickhead
He knows. Well, actually the dumb probably doesn’t. This is the guy that drove up over the neighbour’s front yard twice reversing down and then backed into the wall of my house. Staggers out of the Ute going “that’s a cunt of a driveway!” I should have canned the job then and there…

Listened to him bagging out his boss (who is the guy we quoted and discussed the job with of course) who is now on site trying to fill it. Looked pretty bogged up last night and I’ll find out when I get home tonight how bad it’s come out. I’m expecting I’ll be replacing the timber. $$$$… I can’t see how it won’t come out looking like it’s full of filler!

The same dodgy prick who found a rotten corner on a window sill and slapped some no more gaps over it. He could have just told me it was there… I found that on Friday and cut out all the rotted wood, used the hardener and filled properly.

Anyway. The painter I think is essentially not shit, but he has an employee problem. Which makes it his problem and responsibility, but suffice to say if sander boy had turned up to quote he’d have been told a hard no!!

Well it took a lot of days...but I have finally incurred a rain day. The first for this season. Fortunately the top of the ski field is above the rain! But conditions are fragile and suuuuuuuub par. Slashing some slush and attempting to achieve some form of competence in the park...hardly my usual peak winter moves.

Total dogshit work. Will be sending them home with their stuff in the morning, and I’m off to the timber merchant for a new boards quote. They’re trying to fill the gouges, so best case scenario is a bunch of smooth sections amount the grained bits…

Their approach is lay globby thick layers on and then sand that rather than prepare properly and paint thinly and cleanly. Super weird. The windows I’m going to be sanding right back again too and getting all the paint off the glass. Am now faced with three times the work now than if I’d jsut sanded the old boards and windows myself.. Am scared to think what the timber will cost for what’s going tk be a custom order in this profile…

Flick me a message if you need some contacts. Mckays would be your best bet for boards, tas timber wholesale sometimes or brock building supplies believe or not. If you get real stuck I can run the mould. I don’t have 4 sider but got a spindle Moulder with most cutters. If you could be bothered removing them and denailing I can also skim them through thicknesser and remould. This will only work if they aren’t to cupped.

If you do need people hit me up and I can point you to some good tradies. Been in the game a while now and Tassie is a small place. Unfortunately heaps of cowboys out there now and only going to get worse now.

Thank you! That is very appreciated! Yes, I was going to try timber wholesale - I quite like the people running that place and I’ve bought a lot of Scandinavian pine for my shed bench and shelf building projects. I’ve had some skirting boards made there to an odd profile and it seemed well priced and they got it right. But will try Mckays too.

I will be needing more tradies still! A fridgie to help me with final connections of a heat pump and pump down the existing one would be nice, but can do that myself if I have to - not the sort of part job I expect any to want to help on. And I will need a plumber for connecting a new hot water heater in a new location and ultimately for plumbing in a new bathroom to be built downstairs including a second dunny.

And I still to go up to rectify a couple of dodgy sections on the new roof - he said he’d come back to fix but never did… Foolishly I’d already paid the bill.

But both roofer and painter I’ve learnt that if the business owner comes to quote and you get on with them, it doesn’t mean anything when it’s their idiot employees that turn up to do the actual work.

Yep me too Poodle.
I am at Shiga Kogen , rainy day off.

No rest days permitted! I've been on snow every day since jan 4. I had hoped to hit 75 days this season, but i am not confident I'll stretch it out that far.

Shiga is very pretty. Ill be there in a few days.
