Sock choice seems to follow the equator.

Northern Europeans seem to go for the darker socks when in sandal mode.
When in the Mediterranean then you need white socks to complement your open footwear ensemble.
I don't think Jesus wore socks at all.

I've ridden a few times with a bloke that wears sandals on flats, even a 50km ride. I think his whole foot is one big callous and his long yellow toenails were his crash protection.
