Long time lurker thinking of getting a bit more serious

Hi All,

Been lurking around the forums for a few years and dabbling in Mountainbike’s but considering making the jump and getting a bit more serious about it.

Thought I’d say hi and was hoping to get a few bike recommendations too as I might be in a position for a new bike in the near future, but finding there are so many bikes and hard to know where to start

Currently have a few year old Giant Talon (bought more for fitness a few years ago) but quickly realised I should have gotten something more trail / all mountain focused.

I definitely enjoy heading down more than up, Like small / medium jumps, think flow trails and a bit of technical stuff. Also want something that’s not too bad to pedal back up and more geared towards fun than outright speed.

live in Canberra so most rides would be after work or quickly on the weekend in the area. With the occasional possible trip to Thredbo or similar.

Have had a go in Thredbo a few years ago on a Giant reign back when they were 27.5” but while it was great there think it would be too much bike for the majority of my riding, or riding available in Canberra (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) Bearing in mind this was a hire bike so not really correctly set up for me, found it too squishy to pedal and no fun unless pointed downhill at speed.

If I was to go ahead budget on bike would be max $5k and although it’s smart to go second hand would probably be looking at new.

Kind of thing I’ve been thinking so far are
Giant trance x 29
- bit worried about 29” taking the playfulness of the bike away (never ridden 29 so only going off what I’ve read)
Trek either Fuel ex or remedy
- Remedy looks fun but may fall into the “too much bike” category.

Anyway, thanks for reading my long winded ranting post and any advice appreciated.

hey mate, welcome - another Canberra rider here (there are a good few of us around).

mid travel 29ers are perfect for 90% of riding around here, I've even gone to a short travel (115mm) 29er and that keeps me pretty satisfied for most of what I do. I had a 153mm 27.5 before this, and it was great for Isaac's ridge, Thredbo and the other more downhill style trails, but wasn't as much fun when I just wanted a quick lap of Stromlo. Still wish I had both though! Edit: Should add, lots of people ride 160mm bikes for everything around here and love it, this is just my preference.

Next bike will be 130-140mm 29er in the hope I hit that sweet spot. But even bikes like Norco Optic would be great I think.

Trance X 29 would be pretty good value and more than capable I think - just depends on if you can actually get one in these crazy covid times.

Hurts. Requires Money. And is nerdy.
Giant trance X are pretty hard to beat. Grab one and ride it till it dies. Spend abit of time with a shock pump funding a balance your happy with then happy trails!

Don’t worry about wheelsizes dictating playfulness and all that, everythings gonna feel like a boat after the hardtail. It’ll take an hour or two’s saddle time before you get used to it.

I've got the Trance 29er and its perfect for Canberra, whether its a quick lap of Stromlo or a Brindies 100km+ epic. For me, the Trance X would probably be a bit too much bike but then again there's lots of riders in Canberra that are way over-biked for 99% of the trails in Canberra.

How about a Norco Sight A2 - its a lot of bike for 5k - also comes in 27.5 and 29 so you can choose

If transition still made alloy options I would recommend a Sentinel in a heartbeat. But given they have only released carbon so far (I live in hope alloy is coming), Norfolk Sight is the bike that makes sense. Can’t go wrong

Unless your racing anything mid range travel is a great choice for a one bike person - once you get a feel for what your real passion is you get the speciality bikes

I should add that I a one bike person so wholeheartedly agree with this. A slack and long mid travel bike is fine for trails and can handle the odd shuttle day perfectly well.
only gets a bit of a chore on really flat and tight trails

If anyone should b on a 29 er SS it's you
Why? So I can ride at the same speed everywhere I go? Not enjoy the 30kmh tailwinds we get? Not take it to places like Adelaide, The Otways, Broken Hill?

"It's flat" does not equal "only need one gear". How very neuro-divergent of you.

@Slow N steady asked for a good all-rounder, not a specialist niche.

Whats wrong with everyone? $5k should easily see you with a solid trail bike AND an enduro. Why have one bike when you can have lots?

He could be a stubborn, tragic hipster. You don’t know!

Thanks for all the responses. Given me even more to consider but at least I know I’m kind of on the right track with what I’m looking at, hadn’t considered the Norco at all. Figured I may be a little “over biked” but my thinking is as long as it performs okay in most situations can’t hurt to have the extra for when I wanted to get a bit more adventurous.

Do many bike shops keep these kind of bikes in stock to have a bit of a try or do demo days or anything?

And is Facebook the go to for second hand or is there a better dedicated website.

FB has most of the bikes...it’s just currently full of flogs asking double what things are worth.
Gumtree is full of scammers. I wouldn’t buy off there if you paid me.
Bikeexchange used to have lots of new bikes on clearance...but it’s a bike drought with few bargains.
