Magura MT Trail Sport upgrade from XT M8000

Hi folks,

I'm looking to replace my current XT M8000 brakes with Magura MT Trail Sport - the one with 4 pots front and 2 pots rear.
Anyone has experience with them? I'm hoping they have more modulation and are more reliable than the M8000.

The M8000 I have are very inconsistent. If I'm to brake over long descend, or pump the lever rapidly on a descend, it'll suddenly lose its braking power (lever has no pressure and will be all the way to the bar).
The brakes will regain its original power only if I give it some time between lever pump.

Initially I thought it's because there are air bubbles in the brakes. So I bled them again and again, only to find no joy in fixing it.
I've read few forum entries, and the problem seem to be common among Shimano brakes. Piston not retracting quick enough. This is enough to put me off Shimano brakes.

The other option will be to go Hope Tech 3 E4, which I use on my long travel enduro bike. However, 4 pots rear and front might be overkill for this bike (I used mainly for trail/xc).

Thanks!

If you want 4 pot / 2 pot just go Hope E4 up front and X2 rear with Tech 3 levers.

If you already have Hopes and like them, makes sense to have interchangeable spares and tools for bleeding etc.

Magura is cheaper than Hope. 1 set (caliper + lever) of Hope E4 or X2 = 2 sets (caliper + lever) of Magura Trail Sport.
Trying to save some money if possible.

Shimano really screwed the pooch with the m8000s. Cyclingdeal have the m675 slx brakes for about 2/3rds the cost of the Maguras.

That's fair. You didn't mention a budget in your OP.

I run Maguras MT7's on my Slash. The MT Trail's are an MT7 up front and an MT5 rear.

The bleed process is a bit weird, there's no open close valve, for it, can take a few times fiddling with it to sort a clean bleed, but it's solid after that.

The levers are huge as well, even with my Chromag XL grips, they still sit inboard on the bars a fair way, and when matchmaking it to my eagle shifter, can make it awkward finding a spot that's good for brake position and shifting reach.
Which also makes me want to warn against the only other downside of the brakes, their range of reach adjustment isn't huge, and you won't get the lever in close to the bars, so if you've got little hands, you might not be able to find a comfortable position.

On the other end, they can be slightly fiddly to set up rub free with Storm rotors (which are quite thick) and new pads.

Otherwise, they're amazing and I'm completely converted by them!! The modulation on them is incredible, power is amazing, they don't use crappy DOT fluid and are sexier than Taylor Swift drizzled with honey.

My experience mimics Zaf's pretty closely.

I have two sets of MT5's, very powerful, with great modulation - piss the one piece resin pads off and install the pads from the MT7's. A mate knackered himself first ride in my driveway, no need to slap the lever to endo with these brakes.

MT5's have more reach adjust from what I have read than the MT7's, I can get the lever anywhere I want, however, the lever is long, requiring the to be clamped a fair way in, pushing the dropper remote and shifter to far in. I think magura do smaller one finger levers as an aftermarket upgrade, will look into this when I get sick of moving my hand slightly to shift.

Of the four brakes i own, I had one that was a prick to bleed, got there in the end, but was frustrating for a few rides, the others have been faultless, I am amazed these are not on every 3rd bike, especially considering hibike and bikediscount regularly have them for <90aud an end, absolute bargain.

Edit: I've not used the MT trails with the 2 pot rear, however, I am having no issues at all with modulation on the MT5's with a 180mm rotor on the rear.

I have the MT trail sports, they are a mix of a 4pot mt5 at the front and a 2 pot mt4 at the back.
But unlike the Mt5 and 7 they have a different lever that is much shorter. Seem to be pretty good but havent had much use so far and I think the front needs a bleed.

I can get a pic of the lever later tonight.

Thanks guys. Another question, is it ok to use shimano rotors with the Magura brakes? I just recently replaced the rotors. Would hate to have to buy another set.

Yeah, absolutely fine. Might actually be easyierbto set up rub free because the Maguras rotors have some serious meat to them.
