Tha sounds like quite an adventure. Smoking your way there in a Dutch oven of bucket bongs would have been more fun. Good luck with the recovery.
Well that’s slightly less illegal here now Poodle! Unfortunately I work for people that randomly like to watch me urinate into sample jars now so even if it was my thing, it couldn’t be my thing.

The fun about the career change was going from being the “do we have enough capacity in Centrelink/myGov IT to meet customer demand” guy to being “I give no fucks about the above” around 6 weeks before COVID put it on the floor. Bullet dodged :)

A week or so ago I got 99Bikes to price-beat BikeBug on some Maxxis CrossmarkII. Had settled on getting a pair of these onto the bike partly as a “hey I survived a year of re-learning to ride” and “I really want to put on my new rear wheel that I’d bought after the Bush-full-of-bees stack that took out my original front wheel so I have matching wheels”

They were delivered today and for the first time in about 30 years I changed a tyre. Went flawlessly onto the new wheel so I repeated with the front.

Decided to give the thing a quick clean down as well.

Sure it’s not much in terms of specification but it’s taken me 1000km, given me a few face plants and most importantly boosted my fitness and general heath massively. (I figure 15kg of weight loss over 12 months is good too)

Am off to look at some new gear this weekend as well, again as a bit of a reward to myself for “keeping at it”.

Excellent, keep up the good work.

15kg of weight loss is massive, and it sounds like the lifestyle has adapted to keep it off sustainably too. Bloody great work.

Thanks. The bike is part of the permanent life change thing.

About 10 years ago I realised I was working in a windowless building with 450 (mostly dudes) overweight people who were drinking Coke from 7am and blowing close to $40k a year on chocolates from the “staff club”.

I’ve never been into fitness, not my thing etc, but I did realise that if I didn’t change things by the time I was 35 I’d be likely to die early - like a lot of parents peers did, like men used to when they hit 45. Or worst still being told at 45 I’d have to dramatically change my lifestyle to save it. An ounce of prevention easier to swallow than a pound of cure...

So I changed stuff.

That was about 40kg ago.

Maybe 60kg if you count the stuff I’ve lost twice or thrice.

But doing a 15-20km ride from home to the Murrumbidgee and back or an hours walk at lunchtime (I’m still working from home) is so much better for my work performance than cans of coke ever were.

Today I was pedalling along thinking I’ll just pay someone to give the bike a check-over and fine tune the gears while dodging fresh wombat holes and startling kangaroos. Not one thought about work... magnificent :)
