Mount Buller new EPIC trail

thanks I found a route on strava;

only adds a bit more climbing, will be nice to cruise up and smell the alpine air.
Good grief. You know you're unfit compared to someone else when a climb up Mt Buller - albeit after doing the Epic - is considered only 'a bit more climbing'. I saw at least 6 mountain bikers climbing up the road while on the shuttles. Kudos. I'll take that 2 hours (probably 4 for me) and spend it relaxing on a lounge chatting to my riding buddies.

I enjoyed the 2 main descents along the Epic, most especially the final one down to the Delatite River - that is simply amazing, masterful trail building. We didn't end up doing the Stonefly descent and circuit road as planned - not knowing what was ahead and how long it would take meant we just took the fireroad down, which in itself was actually pretty fun. Some of the dedicated ST traverse was pretty good also - we discovered about half a dozen head of cattle roaming on the singletrack at one point. These giant black apline cows were surprisingly agile at jumping up off the trail.

The Stonefly climb (which I'd never done before) was more interesting than any old fireroad climb, but I dislike climbs that have unnecessary elevation loss along the way. It's a personal thing, and I totally understand that XC-machine-men (like the Strava link above) really love smashing out climbs any which way. But it feels like the Stonefly climb could be about half an hour less (for me anyway) if it was just a climb. Maybe the lay of the land prevents this. Though I'm sure if I was fitter it wouldn't bother me as much. In fact I'm positive that's the case.

I'd be interested to know if there are plans to keep improving the route? e.g. adding more singletrack? Judging by that timelapse vid of part of the construction of the final descent it's quite time consuming. But man ... it's like getting a hit of some amazing drug. You just want more.

Got my first hit of epic yesterday. I'm not much of an xc machine so it was a real struggle at times, especially that final pinch leading up to the last descent. I had cramps in muscles I never knew existed! But it was all worth it for that last few km. Mind blowingly amazing descent.

Go and ride it!

a few of us riding saturday around 9;00 am start, giant hardtail 29er.
Don't think I'll get up there that early. Might get the shuttle up. I'd say I'll keep an eye out for you but I highly doubt I'll be any where near catching you. I'll be on a RIP9.

Just trying to make sense of the shuttle info on the bikebuller website (never been to mt buller), the way I read it the mirimbah - mt sterling shuttle only goes as far as TBJ, the mirimbah - mt buller shuttle info doesn't mention the epic trail, and the epic page doesn't seem to mention where the trail starts. Does this shuttle take you to the start of the epic?

For someone who hates climbs would I be better off just starting at TBJ?

Thanks.

The start of the epic is in the mt Buller village near the fire station. If you can't find it ask in one of the bike shops on the mountain as they are all quite close to the start.

Here's my stats from 2 days ago for the full epic
5 hours 40 minutes 41 secs
1026 metres ascent
1975 metres
41.32 kms
50.4 kmh max speed

I rode it with my brother who was on his '99 GT Zaskar hardtail with v brakes. Champion effort. I felt reasonably good at the end and my fitness isn't out of this world. I've been doing a few endurance events with the motto DFL>DNF. I spent a bit of time waiting for my bro which is to be expected given his bike.

I think a bit over half the climbing was in the 15 kms to telephone box junction but it is a really interesting trail. Worth the extra climbing from my opinion.

If you don't like climbing get the shuttle to Buller and ride gang gangs and the delatite river trail.

I rode Buller a couple of years ago, before the Epic trail. From what I can see, the Epic is not a new trail; it's actually the existing trails that you ride in a specific order with a new descent at the end after Stonefly. When I heard about the Epic I was planning another trip down there but I don't think I will after looking more into the "new" trail.
If you're not into climbing then you could shuttle Copper Head and the DH tracks, there is also the Delatite River trail (mainly fireroad) one other that I didn't do... Klingspoon or something.

well a couple to big days riding at Mt Buller.

Day 1: Epic + Climb back up to Mt Buller on road: 58k | 2851 Metres of Climbing. The Epic alone takes in around 1500 Metres of Climbing.

Epic starts at Village and is an umbrella trail over existing ones through Buller and out to the Telephone Box Junction Cafe.

Stonefly: from 7k at 1400 metres elevation to 14k 1620 metres elevation, so that's 200 metres elevation gain in only 7ks of riding - with lots of up and down bits so probably more gain/loss, the single track section is tough going more a walking track with lots of tight corners, exposed rocks, just twisty technical stuff that's hard to get any speed on. There was a group of runners on the second day I did it and we swapped leads multiple times; me on downhills and them on the up hills. I probably needed to be more aggressive but when you still have plenty of climbing and ks to go, well this section could easily cause you to burn up too much energy. The area you ride through is stunning.

Telephone Box Junction Cafe 17k Mark:
TBJ: This place rocks, after a death grip of a fireroad descent from Stonefly you have a narrow single track line on a pretty rocky fireroad you arrive at the TBJ cafe. Really great place run by a pretty cool mountain bike guy who is a great bike mechanic, cook, trail builder and as I found out on day 2 has fantastic local knowledge of area, so precise that he was able to draw me a custom map to Mt Sterling and then Buller of all the single track I could take. Super friendly, awesome coffee, home made sausage rolls, biscuits. Plan to spend some time chillin out here and support this venture. There's big plans for Mt Stirling area including fat bike xc in winter. The owner can also organize accommodation and a shuttle service to TBJ and tours that aren't on any mtb map - so yes an alternative to going to Buller for accommodation and to start your riding.

TBJ onwards 1277 metres elevation to 1450 metres:
More climbing folks (with up and down bits for more elevation), nothing too hard just fireroad at around 6-7%, spin up the middle ring and enjoy the surroundings. This is the Epic after-all and a black run, not only technically but fitness wise as well. This is XC machine territory, although part of my group were reasonably fit but not that technical yet they managed to get by, bit slower of course.

And finally, yes finally you see the 'welcome' log. Here's the start of 7ks of the most flowing, expertly designed and built single track probably in Australia. It's fast, has perfect lines to offer speed and cornering at the maximum you (and bike) can handle. Everything supports max flow, surface is compacted dirt, some soft edges but overall a predictable and trusting medium to really push the limits. What can I say just ride, pedal, turn, get off the seat and work the line as much as you can, a few chances to pedal, this is one part of mountain biking where words can't describe the experience of how much fun it is. Nice launch off a log at end so get some air.

After that its some single track along the river to the road at Mirimbah - where you can get the shuttle or ride.

Day 2 was back down to TBJ again and after talking to owner he gave me a rough map to Mt Stirling summit and back to Buller via Stonefly descent and other single track closer to village.

37k | 1670 metres climbing

Started at Village on Epic, then Stonefly to TBJ. Mainly fireroad from TBJ before I hit a walking track climb that eventually got me to the summit of Mt Stirling, I was the only one out there folks, no bike tyres in the dirt, just horse shoes. Over Mt Stirling with majestic views of Buller and surrounding mountains and onto Stonefly descent, a fast wicked beast that had me dropping down steep chutes at high speed. No complaints here, had enough in tank to really enjoy it. Finally back to Buller and in a word stuffed but really couldn't be any better. I had my fair share of the gift that keeps on giving.

guys i need some help!

going to buller next weekend for the first time and have NO idea how it works with the tracks and shuttles. All i know is i like the sounds of stonefly, klingsporn, dellite river, abomb.

We all have AM bikes and would rather descend then climb.

i found this: $100 2 day deal inc free beer, pizza and sausage sizzle.
http://bluedirt.com.au/mtbriding/trips/mt-buller/

which seems good, but i got no idea how long it takes to do tracks to get shuttles etc? should i just book all times???

any tips on how to ride buller for maximum fun/decent?

plan to ride sat and sunday next week.

cheers!!

Think of it this way:

Abom/International/Copperhead/Yellowpost/Outlaw Express (4 - 7min runs) - Consider this the DH shuttled zone (Only shuttling the top of the hill)

Klingsporn/Delatite (20 - 40min runs) - AM shuttled zone (bottom of the mountain to the top)

Stonefly/Corn Hill (2hr+ rides) - XC zone - You'll need to ride to the top (i.e. no shuttles)

If you prefer descending, I'd spend the morning on the DH tracks and then the afternoon riding Klingsporn once and then as many Delatites as you can fit in. Klingsporn is more technical but more rewarding.

Anyone need accommodation on the Mountain this weekend? Shirtz?

I'm basically going up by myself atm (i don't even care if it's snowing), but I'm booked for the bluedirt shuttles and staying at my friends lodge that I usually stay at.
It's called Terama (10 Goal Post Road). You can see One tree Hill track while eating breaky it's a very close! Won a lodge award recently too.
$50 a night (cash), great lodge and has a hose to clean the bikes (bike wash station under construction).. They haven't advertised it well so they have me pushing it now, lol.

I'll be up tomorrow night and Saturday (Sunday night is okay too). If you know of anyone looking for somewhere; send me a message on rotorburn!

Cheers! Dan
