MTB Trails in Batemans Bay & Mogo

View attachment 410325

A couple of friends of mine got a special preview of the Mogo trails and really rate them. Marcelo from Next Level MTB is a Penguin local and if these trails are anything like their other work that I have ridden like Iron Tor, Silver City Trails and Latrobe-Wild Mersey they should be pretty special.
They have had 10 excavators going all at once to get this project done. It's definitely a huge project!

Wow that's an eyesore
It won't be so bad once it all settles in. Most new trail looks pretty confronting when it's under construction but give it 12 months when the leaf litter covers the sides and the vegetation grows back up and it will be nowhere near as bad.

I assume the rocks they're armouring the sides with will extend up that whole climb. Will end up looking more landscaped than natural I suppose, but the trails will cover a big area. I'm more interested in what they'll do with the rockier area, but I think they're leading with the big beamed jump lines that draw the punters in.

Are you talking about the western side of the highway? Some very unique terrain out that way. Trails will need to be well designed as the dirt out that side is terrible and motos chew everything up out there.

I'm not sure where that shot was taken, they haven't shared maps and alignments as far as I can see. Doesn't look like it's near the Dog Trap Rd entrance though.

If you mean the Western side as in where the old Mogo trailhead was with Snake Track etc, I think most of it is over there.. There will be two or three trail heads when it's all done, and I think it will all be connected. You could link it up by going under the highway before but it always felt a bit sketchy own there I thought, like you could be carried away by floodwater if it rained a lot.

From what I've heard the first building has been focussed on the big flow trails that are so popular at the moment, but that there's a bunch of rockier terrain that they plan to do some more interesting (to me) trails on.

Nothing wrong with this kind of thing, but it's starting to feel a bit ubiquitous now.

I'm more interested in riding through these areas, which is where the next focus of the build is:

“The terrain isn’t super rocky, and there aren’t a tonne of (natural) features (in that section), so Next Level have had to manufacture those features and that fun factor,” says Spicer. “On the West side, the terrain is quite different. It’s a bit more inaccessible — a bit more adventure-style riding — that’ll be a remote drop with a couple of long descents.

The geology on that side is quite different. We’ve got a lot of decomposed granite and some giant granite boulders. It’s a totally different environment, and they will complement each other nicely,”

G'day all,

Newish to the forum, been lurking a wee bit!

Am heading down to Mogo and Narooma this week to check out the trails. Any recommendations on pubs, restaurants etc in the area?

Thinking about crashing at the Broulee Holiday Park (sleeping in the back of the car) anyone have any experience of this joint? Is there anything similar in Narooma?

Thanks heaps!
FG

Our place is to the North of Batemans Bay so I'm not so familiar with what's available at Broulee. I have heard good things about the Broulee Brewhouse though.

Keen to hear your ride report though!

Some good videos from this guy on what to expect on the trails:

Not sure if it's the GoPro effect, but those blacks look more like blues to me.

Maps are up on Trailforks:

I believe the old Dam loop is still the same so look to the new stuff first.

For Mogo, I reckon you can just find a spot to camp along the beach between Broulee and North Head, or camp at Moruya North Head campground. Monarch Hotel in Moruya is good. Brewery at Broulee too.
For Narooma, Dalmeny caravan park/ campground is very handy. Fish n chips across the road. The brewery at Dalmeny also very close to Narooma trails. Dalmeny is actually closer than Narooma. Good food at Salt on the harbour in Narooma

Banger couple of days @Mogo and @Narooma.

Firstly Mogo.

Spent 1 brief arvo and most of a day there - not enough time. Arvo sess was at the Mogo town trailhead. Only managed a couple of short runs on Lightning and Homerun - 2 little greens that are a heck of a lot of fun. Homerun is a nice easy green to get back to the carkpark that will put a smile on your face.

Day 2 Botanical Gardens trail head. Firstly if you're fit the green climbs aren't too bad. After a couple of climbs, Skyway, a fast flowy easy green that was honestly the most fun trail of the day. Really well made, loads of fun. Second climb went down what I think must be an older trail, Devil is the Temptor. Again a nice easy green that went for miles through some nice jungle ; really fun track. Next the miles and miles long climb Up to HQ to get to Zooniverse North. Hated this trail really had nothing going for it at all a waste of the horrendous climb. From here I should have gone to the Trig section but not knowing, went down Bad Dawg to the dam and back to the car park. Bad Dawg was ok.

Back up and come down Botany Way which was ok a bit techy for my taste. One last time up and down Cosmic Thunder which again for a last run down to the car park is great, flowy smooth and you get a lot of speed, a nice end to the session.

Met a very nice bloke in the car park from Batemans Bay MTB who recommended the green and blue trails near the Trig. Unfortunately I drove around trying to find them - no bueno - my navigation was not so great. Meant to try again and go back on my way home but was too cooked to do so.

Overall Mogo - it would have been better to have some trail info before going ; I definitely missed the best trails and there is too much climbing but I will definitely go back and check out the Trig and other areas I missed - there are plenty of trails to keep you interested for quite a few days I reckon.

Next up Narooma. Booked the shuttle to the gravity section. They had 2 cars going so was nice and quick (apart from one gap of about 20 mins) they were chocka but the blokes running it were very friendly and helpful. It would be nice if the shuttle area was closer to the main trail head ; maybe I am just lazy. Anyways for the morning session I managed I Love Steve - best trail for my level totally awesome fun. Did this one about 4 times. Sir Wax a Lot - hated it, not my thing, very rocky and the steep berms were easy to slide out on. It is wrongly classed as beginner IMHO. Thomas the Jank Engine was fun, took me out of my comfort zone with the janky techy bits, but it was ok. The Whale Trail was ok, a bit boring and too long for me. Chilli and Lime was above my pay grade, stacked it on a berm (slid out) no damage except to my confidence. So I skipped Colonel Senders but I since learned it was probably more suited to me than Chilli and Lime. Next time.

So Gravity Zone done, after lunch off to the Playground.

Where to start, as I mentioned I am not fit so the trek to get to the 2 trails I wanted to try was tough. First up on recommendation from someone, Puffy Horse - nice trail up my alley. Then the painful climb to the top of Thunderbirds are Go. Was it worth the climb? Not sure. The first section is nice, flowy and jumpy really good. The climb in the middle can GTFO. Nightmare, I was absolutely cooked by then so hated it. But the bottom section was great - my level-ish for the jumps ; I can clear some but not all but I am relatively comfortable. Anyway did a couple of climbs to this small line to end the day with a smile on my face. Next morning cam back and smashed that same line for almost 2 hours - up and down, Loved it. Managed to clear most of the jumps (not in the same run though) I am braking too much and my technique is not quite dialled yet.

Looked at Quantum - that is the level I am aiming for - it looks gnarly and fun.

Anyway, TIL:
1) I either need to get fit or get an eeb (time to put the hours in for a decent base)
2) My newish bike is freaking awesome
3) Mountain biking peeps are the best
4) South Coast is beautiful
5) The water is freezing
6) Broulee Brewery is ace

Cannot wait to go back and spend some more time in Mogo (and actually manage to body board when the water is warmer).

Thanks everyone for the recommendations above.
