MTB Trails in Batemans Bay & Mogo

Haven looked into Tathra, will add that to the list.

Tathra was totally burnt out with the fires, but has pretty much recovered from it all. There’s two lots of trails… the main bit near town which is manicured and the old bit up the hill near water tank, which is more old school trails… being my preferred type of trail. Having Trailforks is handy at water tank as there is not a lot of signage.

Another great trail worth riding is at Blores Hill near GlenMaggie lake, with a blend of new stuff and old school.

It definitely needs a shuttle service and maybe the jump line they've been showing for the past year will actually be open now.

If so I might check it out again.

The self shuttling going on in within the main park at the moment (all so lazy people can avoid climbing a 50m elevation gain up a groomed green trail) is absolutely diabolical. I'm shocked there hasn't been an accident yet and/or no one is thinking about liability. Also don't think residents and other users would be too happy about it.

A lot of the trails cross over main fireroads like dog trap and ridge road but also the B grade fireroads (like the ones next to big dogs bone and Mitchells) and the visibility for both rider and driver is poor. Combine that with dumbasses parking in the stupidest spots (blocking entries to trails etc).

Rocky trails piss poor solution was a couple of log chicanes on two of the trails that cross the it main roads to slow riders down.

Need to get the dual cab cuck trucks and 4bys out of there altogether and maybe just have a dedicated paid shuttle restricted to certain areas, similar to Narooma.

TLDR - they need to introduce a paid and restricted shuttle service within the main park ASAP.

Locking up roads for paid shuttle services can be a real minefield.

Down in Tassie there's a mixture.
George Town, Maydena and Queenstown all have exclusive shuttle services.
This is possible because the roads to the shuttle drop off point are either leased or purpose built for shuttling so it's easy to exclude the general public.

Derby and St Helens are a free for all.
With these two the shuttle roads are public roads so they can't stop people driving them. They briefly tried in Derby but they soon found out that they didn't have a legal leg to stand on to do so.

If the roads are two-way sealed or very well maintained gravel with good visibility and the trails do not cross over, then yep.

None of the roads are sealed, most in varying conditions of average to poor.

Ridge Rd , which is one of the main roads through there , was actually closed off at one end for (over a year from memory) while the new the Batemans bay bypass was being built. It was great being able to ride gravel, people who live up there being able to walk their dogs etc.

Some of these fireroads are very 'b grade', almost one way only and fairly overgrown with the trails crossing over. Very difficult for riders and drivers to see properly.

Yeah that fire road up to the top of Big Dogs Bone and Skyrabbit is in atrocious condition but when I was there it was quite busy with self shuttles.

Would not the logging trucks sort out those self shuttling. After riding moto's up around Dorrigo many years ago I quickly learnt to stay off the main fire roads and if I had to use them it was at a very slow pace. Nothing like coming around a corner and coming across a logging truck come at ya.

I do see at times some general public punters some how drive their car up the fire road to the half way point at George Town. Don't know how they do it as I was told the gate down the bottom was locked. I was also told there is alot of crops in that wider area.

They were having trouble with the auto boom gate at one stage so it was just left open for a while, and there are a few linking fire trails to the Saddle area so there might be a way to get in from a different access point.

A lot of people had a sook about not being able to self shuttle Mt Owen. After seeing that shuttle road for the first time I can see why you can't open that to the general public. It would be chaos, the 4X4 shuttle vehicles have to drop into low range to do the steepest bit. I can imagine some dickhead trying to get their Corolla up there and rolling it off the side of the mountain. 😂

I find it strange that very few people self shuttle at Hollybank. Your allowed to.It's twenty minutes from Launceston, your driving past it if your coming from Derby to George Town and Launceston. But hey it's great for me. If no one is parked down the bottom, halfway up at the crossing of the fire trail or at the top I know I can let it go on the way down with out worrying if anyone is riding up It seems as though when you tell people they can't do that you get a fair few people who have to go and do what there told not to do. When there told they can do it then they loose interest.

Do people think that you are not allowed to self shuttle there? Apart from pedalling up, you have no other option but to self shuttle.
I've self shuttled there a few times and pedalled up a few times, never paid for a shuttle when Vertigo was doing it.

I doubt there is many people if any that think you are not allowed to self shuttle there. There are many web pages describing the place and how to get to the top. I guess it just lost it's shine since other newer MTB riding areas opened up.Definetly spoilt for choice for MTB riding areas in Tassie.
