Best way is to have separate WiFi access points linked back to your router via ethernet. Ubiquiti and Araknis are good WiFi products. Gli.net make good routers with lots of control over VPNs, limiting access at certain times for certain devices etc etc. Some weird and annoying internet issues led me to changing to a different plan (off the 5g modem and back to hard wired into the house). Turns out it might not have been that as the issues remained, and I’ve traced the problem to the Google Nest WiFi mesh thing.
Ditching that the new modem I’ve been suppled does a good job, but I’m keen to get the signal strong and robust through the house.
What’s the latest and greatest in WiFi mesh boosters or whatever?
Nothing too techy, or it’ll be about as reliable as the Rotorburn server…
As a bonus option, I wouldn’t mind having a separate network for the kids that I can restrict in some way (ie YouTube at set times or something like that) - is that a thing?
I did have a few hard-wired Ethernet points installed when we did the house; currently my computer and the streaming box are plugged in to those. I could sacrifice one of those points.
I only had the mesh thing because that’s what people said was good at the time. I don’t understand what it is anyway so happy to ditch it.
House is concrete block work but not huge.
I’ll have a look at the brands you suggest - maybe some have a pass through so I can still hard connect Ethernet?
I have a TP-Link Deco network (4 mesh routers) with ethernet bypass for the breeze block sections.I did have a few hard-wired Ethernet points installed when we did the house; currently my computer and the streaming box are plugged in to those. I could sacrifice one of those points.

Hi xxxxxxxxxxxxxx, From 1 July 2025, your internet plan will be changing. Your service is on a legacy plan that is no longer offered, so we will move you to the closest equivalent current plan. This unfortunately also means your plan price will go up. |
Your service at xxxxxxxxxxxx SA will change from NBN 50Mbps/20Mbps Unlimited ($79.00) to NBN Value 50Mbps/20Mbps Unlimited ($93.00). |
I got a price rise with Exetel too - it's on the wholesale side so retailers are forced to raise their prices.
Disappointing to see prices going up in general, especially when I'm getting emails from my mates to say speeds are going up in September, not prices (FTTP only though)
