Am I missing something, or is this basically just replacing the chainring for an internal chain, more cogs / bearings / axles??

That dropout/chainstay interface would want to be a lot more supported than it looks in this pic - otherwise all I can see happening is (at best) excessive play developing in the interface, or (at worst) snappy-snappy, crunch, wheel jammed, scrapey crash time...
