Post up ya 4WD!

Makes sure you check the safety ratings... The new D40 (and one other which i cant remember off the top of my head right now) cant even be insured because of their lack of safety rating..

Just going to say that this would be BS. I fail to see how Nissan would sell a car that CANNOT be insured. And anyway, wouldn't that be illegal in some way?

How compatible would parts from a 1994 surf be with a 1990 4Runner?

Depends on which parts. If the motors are similar/the same then those parts should transfer over, but drivetrain, suspension and interior/wiring may not. Due to different drive shaft lengths and whatnot. For example, the Exhaust Manifold from a 2.8ltr turbo engine WILL fit my 3ltr non turbo, as well as all the crossover pipes, that's on a Hilux.

No go! Com'n

Well I have a very hopefull outlook on this truck. 300,000 ks but it is the mighty td42t factory. I can say no more than that the outside and inside, including engiene and engiene bay, it is immacculate for a 16yr old vehicle.

So I'm asking those that have eyes to see, can you tell -in your opinion- where the big round bar (don't know the name) meets the left side of the chassis rail. Does it look like bad rust?

I'm going to have a good look at it anyway, thought the peeps here may give me a swaying opinion before I travel.

I can pull things apart and put them back together but this is beyond my abilities.
If it is bad, how hard + how much $ do you think it would cut the bank to fix that?

Cheers
Bermie

looks to be only surface rust mate. But only you have the ability to truly tell. My Rover has the same, it's just surface rust on mine. But still would get under there and give it a solid checking over.

I don't know much about patrols, but there is something that looks like a crack or a grinder cut there aswell between where the tube mounts and the round hole in the rail just in front of it which would warrant closer inspection... Something there definitely doesn't look quite right..

if it connects to the chassis, um am i correct in assuming that there is a cross member?....yeah, you want to have them in sound condition
where is the car located, if its near the ocean- you can bet your left nut there will be rust in the chassis somewhere!

Yeah it's fucked, the aliens have worked some barbie dolls on that bar, ken did a wobbly and mouldy eroded all confidence in the swinging bar thing.

The yellow thing is backwards too by the way.

I'll take it off your hands for nothing.

PM to deal....

His - '78 FJ45
Hers - new Prado, semi kitted out for trips now that we have little ones.

Traveled most of Australia's iconic outback tracks & destinations in the old ute and pretty much every track in the Vic High Country. Prado's done a bit of High country work and a few Central Oz trips too.

Travis.

My first 4WD was the BJ45 shorty. Awesome little truck that was, still miss it.

Is your FJ still going?

Thanks for the reply's guys. It's a canberra car, well 2nd owner is in Canbs. I know I need to check it out. Everything else is in fantastic condition so I guess it is worth a run down there for a good look see.

Cheers.

Anybody have experience with mechanical reliability with late model Tritons? Won't be doing any crazy off-roading or heavy towing. Or any suggestions on a forum to get info that isn't ridiculously brand biased?

Our ones at work have been very good. No congenital issues.

They are primitive compared to others in the fleet (Hilux, Ranger and Colorado) but great utilitarian vehicle and with better back seat comfort (not necessarily ride) than others.

The 2.5L is lethargic around town (manual - we don't have petrol or auto's).

Servicing is relatively cheap, but not depreciation.

A couple of mates with them and happy. Won 4x4 mag mid ute 2 years in a row, so cant be dog.

Oh and the poster who said you cant get insurance on a D40. Bullshit!

While the post 2011 ones are better (http://www.caradvice.com.au/158321/2012-nissan-navara-gets-four-star-ancap-rating/), have many mates with pre 2011, all fully insured (in Victoria).

There are other reasons you might re consider before buying one though:

http://www.drive.com.au/used-car-reviews/nissan-navara-d40-used-car-review-20131129-2yfb7.html

Review forgot to mention fragile diffs and clutches though (once again based on (tradie) mate's experiences).

EDIT: corrected One, to Won

Cheers mate, Triton is at the top of the list after checking things out today, great value and better safety rating than D22.

Just a little bit of experience ;)

I have an 07 ML, since new. Pretty much every mate I have owns either an ml (06-09) or mn (09-15) triton.

The mn suffers a touch from turbo lag on take off. The long tub can increase chance of chassis failure IF OVERLOADED and used offroad. There was a batch that had casting issues in the engine which has caused failure but Mitsubishi have been very good in recognising and replacing motors.

They suffer from carbon build up due to euro emission regulations but is easily solved. All modern diesel's suffer this to some extent.

Not a lot I don't know about them to be honest (thanks to 7yrs as a very active member on www.newtriton.net) except for the new model about to be released.

Excellent car both on and off road, can fit 33" tyres on standard suspension. Massively underrated.

Feel free to ask any questions you have or jump on the forum. (we have had a member invited by Mitsubishi to the new model launch and have been building a good relationship with them over the last few years.)

Awesome! With leaf out the back!

Anyone driving a 2.8 GU? Hims want coil. The red 4.2 sold before i even got a look.

Fridgie, can I ask what it cost to fit the truck out as you have it? There is a few into it just looking.

You going to the Cape in time or have you already been?
