It's a family hatchback, I'm not looking to throw great money at it (although I do have a set of slightly larger Advantis in the shed). I think I might just drop a profile size, Potenza RE003s were my first choice until I discovered they didn't come in that size.

In that size, you won’t find anything “high performance” as such (because it’s a shopping trolley size) but you’ll find very decent touring tyres.

Look for something a Yoko C Drive, or a Conti PremiumContact, or a Michelin Premecy, Bridgestone T001. Prioritise grip over tyre life, basically go for the high end of the market.

Whatever the top tier tyres in this size you choose, they’ll be more than acceptable. If you’re out driving these, you’re likely driving too fast for public roads...

When I binned my SS:

Mr Plod: "Were you driving too fast for the conditions?"

Me: Usually

We have a family shopping trolley that I put 17x7.5 OzRacing wheels and Ecsta V720s on. Was nervous about them in the wet until I realised that the standard eco tyres are so hard that the semis had better grip in the wet that the eco things in the dry. Noisy bastards though.

I rate the Conti PremiumContacts...had a few sets on the Polo. They have great wet weather grip yet last quite some time. And you should be able to get ‘me on a 4-for-3 deal which makes them not too pricey.

The older model PremContact 2 is a good value tyre too, they’re often on special as you say. Very soft, short life but about the best wet grip you’ll get. Quite soft sidewalls so not “sharp” handling as some others, but in that size you’re really after outright grip rather than sports car handling.

Had a set on the Megane when Kirsty was commuting up and down the Southern Outlet road in Hobart over winter. I just asked my tyre guy for the best wet tyre money no object!!

Time for 500rkw. It's a battle between Borg Warner 9180 with lots of stuffing around or a gtx3584rs.(it'll drop straight in.) new stainless exhaust and probably brakes..tempted by ceika over secondhand Brembos. Had a pair of 6/8 pot K sports but sold them.

There was one of these at the David Hack classic and an M635CSi. Love the M1 engine. Also more XY GTs than Ford ever manufactured...

Ans a V12 E type. Who thought putting the carbies over thevtop of the exhaust was a good idea?

Settled on 3.45 diff gears for the Escort, same overall ratios to the XR4. Looking for a Trutrac to for them to.

I've always had a bit of a thing for the M635CSi.
One of the first proper factory touring cars. Even today the styling looks tough.
BMW and the inline 6 = perfection.
Very rare too (unlike Falcon GT's and Holden Dunnydore /Torana SLR Brock whatevers......

Tailshafts already been modified, centre bearing is dead again though. Diff itself seems to be alright, doesn't get massive launches as it's having to be the daily at the moment until the 370 comes home.

On that topic... whats everyones favourite engine sounds??

Mine is an absolute cliche, the 787B at full noise:

Realistically though, I love the sound of a straight six... its not the most popular but I just think they sound like a fkn hurricane or something. I had a 3" exhaust on my 105 series landcruiser with a 4.5l petrol straight 6 and loved the sound of it near the limiter - which it pent way too much time at.

The 787B at full noise (or those videos of its being started and revved...) tend to end up with me needing a cold shower.

At the other end of the spectrum, I do love a 3 cylinder too

Now that is how to have fun. Sounds like it burnt a valve in one shot?
My old man has a restored 633csi to better then factory that hasn't moved for 15 years. Sadly he left the coolant in it, can poke a finger through the water jacket. Could be a fun project for granddad and grandson in coming years to drop in a new engine.
