It's more or less preventative maintenance like it's not going to fix many problems on a worn out motor. I was a bit sceptical years ago as one bloke I used to work for over pushed those carbon clean flushes all the time. We did a few cylinder heads on cars that had the treatment from new and surprisingly inside the manifolds and cylinder heads were fairly clean.I was curious about that. It's never been done to Mrs George's Colorado. Should I do a little bit at a time, or has that horse bolted?
Subaru has an intake foam treatment as part of the servicing, if you didn't rev the bejesus out of the car after using it, it would make the plugs miss and sometimes that's a bit hard when you have the owner waiting in the next room. So then you had to pull the plugs out and clean them or replace them, a lot of times we used to wait until a big service was due and give the motor a carbon clean before the spark plugs were changed.
The old diesels that were fairly neglected used to spit out carbon everywhere, you would end up with black soot all over the ground at the end of the tailpipe, and sometimes you would get a little miss where a piece of carbon came loose and lodged itself under the valve.
I used the Wynns fuel tank additive (diesel cleaner) once a year on my brother's 5l Hilux up until 400K, he took over the servicing until it reached over 600k, and kept on using the diesel cleaner. The injectors and cylinder head have never been removed from the motor in all that time. The motor is a bit rattly from old age but still runs well. I used to know the Brisbane wynns rep really well and one thing he said is not to overuse it.
