Project Car / Motorbike thread. Let's see 'em.

Dunno - they’re a set of used wheels/tyres I got cheap for an i30 I’m sorting out for mum. Going by the adjacent tweak to the edge of the rim I’m going with kerb grazing. It’s a cut, not impact from a pothole.

Am putting 16 steelies on it as they live on shitty bush tracks and the car came with hectic low profile alloys that would suck.
Is the sidewall/edge pinched above the bigger rim damage?

Maybe a little… Shows up more in the nighttime photo under torch light.

It’s not anything I wouldn’t happily drive on, but not sure what the roadworthy rules are these days.

10 points to anyone who can name the mountain in the background.

Well I can tell you that one race weekend some larrikins modified the first word of the hill's name with a few carefully placed green garbage bags, with a decidedly non family-friendly result.

Is this that techo wizzbang lane assist stuff?

Top comment gave me a good belly chortle.

I shit you not - I saw a VW Passat that was like that driving on the highway one day in Melbourne. We were both going opposite directions in the middle lane (of three each way) and I could see his passenger side doors until he was very close. It was such a weird feeling. Was an old Asian dude driving. Not sure if he'd ploughed over a gutter, been rear ended (though I don't remember any panel damage on the car...) or maybe something was broken underneath it, but yeah... He didn't look dodgy, but what was weirder is he didn't look at all concerned. o_O

Need a decent mechanic in Melbourne eastern suburbs. Any recommendations?

FILs Mazda 3 need driveshaft seals done and I don’t have the time this trip… His old usual guy retired.

Sigh. Failed the used car transmission lucky dip on the FD i30 I got for mum. Fluid was pretty nasty so I did a fluid filter service on it and now after its first hot high speed run it’s not happy…

Torque converter stopped locking and then it started getting unsure if it wanted third or fourth. Should have left the manky fluid in and delayed its death.

Hmm. Might get a valve body put in it, apparently they’re famous for them. And it’s not slipping, it’s a control issue. Worth a shot.

I’m back on the boat to tassie on Friday, so that’s going to be done at the mechanics in Castlemaine. While they’re at it I’ll get them to put drop links in it that started creaking like a bastard only after it got warm and after I’d packed up the tools…

I see a pattern here.

You like to play car parts roulette?
Not car parts - cars… I’ve gotten pretty lucky most times- the two Magnas and the first Hyundai I got mum were both cheap and proved long lived. The Mazda 3 I got Kirsty’s dad he loves and has done heaps of reliable kms.

This one was a bit more of a gamble as I bought it sight unseen by me and relied on an uncle (who used to work in the car trade as a mechanic), but he missed a few things. Oh well. I’ll have a valve body fitted and cross my fingers!
