My current car should be sold by tomorrow and I'm in the market for a replacement. I'm after a 4 seater with some grunt, thinking about a Subaru B4. Has anyone got any experience with them/other suggestions? Budget is $13-$15k.

My uncle had a B4 for a while, it was very gutless despite the twin turbo. You had to get it above 4 or 5000 rpm to get the turbos spinning and then you were on the redline. He thought about getting MRT or a similar company to tune it so that the power was more useable but in the end he replaced it with a current model 6 cylinder model, which is much better for everyday use. But not as fast at the limit (obviously). I just had a quick glance at car sales, the 6 cylinders are probably pushing your budget a little..

Didn't B4's have detonation issues from people using <98 RON unleaded?

I've spent a bit of time various JDM B4's, and I love them. You learn how to drive them and get the most out of their engine, and I would say that what g-fish is talking about is the same with all twin Subaru's from mid 90's onwards. They're bloody fun to hold on the plus side of 6000 revs, and I would have no misgivings about getting (another) one.

It's not a B4 engine, but it's in a B4... ;)

Heat soak was another offender in the B4.

At a stretch, 15k may very well get you into a Gen IV Liberty GT.

A quick look on Car Sales reveals there are a number of 3.0R-B (6-cyl) sedans kicking too. Can't speak for the Lib but the Outback 3.0R goes quite hard. 6-speed too - same box as the STi WRX?

From what I can gather, the pinging is because the engine is designed for 100RON Japanese fuel.

As for the valley of death, I would eventually get round to a few bolt-ons and a tune to minimise that.
I could just go for a GC8 wrx or sti but the nicer interior appeals to me.

But overall consensus is positive?

Also, has anyone had any experience with NSW to ACT rego transfer? There doesn't seem to be many in Canberra.

I would avoid a B4 personally. Prone to pinging and doing big end bearings, the TT system is ordinary, Aus-delivered tune is shit and troubleshooting when something inevitably goes wrong can be a nightmare due to the complexity of the thing.

That said I used to have a '99 JDM GT-B wagon and loved the thing. Power delivery is anything but linear - decent pull from ~2500-4300 then NOTHING til 5k then an alright push in the back to 7500 redline, but enough to have a bit of fun.

If you're set on a B4 get something thats been converted already, like this.

Cheers,
Andrew.

Got my CA18 wing, mudguards all on today. Thought I'd go out and take a few snaps before the sun was gone.

32 GTST front brake setup waiting to go on, R32 GTR passenger seat in my room currently serving as GT5 station, fake bride about to be manufactured, got my Nardi 330mm on. All in all coming along well.

Gonna save up for 32 GTR rear swaybar, then I can start to save for the SR20DE+T conversion. Hand grenade motor FTW, if I blow it up I'm only $400 out of pocket and I get to enjoy full boost from 2200rpm and way more torque than a similar powered sr20det

Thanks for the info! I'd already planned to go and have a look at that one, assuming its a quality swap and not a backyard job. Finding insurance for an STi-swapped B4 as a 19 year old though... :highly_amused:

No worries mate, I don't know the bloke but the car is for sale on the RSLC & Subyclub forums. Looks to be a very neat conversion. Insuring probably wouldnt be that big a deal I wouldnt think. It's just swapping turbo motor to turbo motor (albeit -1). Not like N/A to turbo or an increase in displacement, as always best to check with your chosen insurer.

Everything insurance related is never fun. Bunch of (unfortunately necessary) crooks!

video work

here is a lil vid of me checking how rigid the rotisserie is and if it will hold up to the swinging.... all passed I think. Now I can start on the real work of fitting an air con unit to the underside without crawling around on my back :)

I'm trying to replace the indicator switch on my chevy. There are 37 steps involved in removing the switch, 10 specialised tools and I basically have to pull the steering column apart. I suspect the chevrolet steering column was designed by an idiot savant who hated everyone.

^^^^^^^^^^ chevy what?
'67 Camaro.

I think I've found a way around removing the column-I can cut the harness of a new switch and solder the new switch to the old harness, still in place. Which would save taking the whole column apart. The tilt column is like a ship in a bottle-assembled from the inside out.
