Race the Train....again!

After the success of last year's inaugural Goldfields Steam Train Challenge we are pleased to announce it's full steam ahead for Sunday November 2, 2014!!

The event provides an opportunity for cyclists to either race (competitively) or ride (socially) alongside the historic Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR) steam train between Castlemaine and Maldon. It’s a 17.6km off-road route utilising existing dirt trails and tracks that run alongside the broad gauge branch-line. This year we’ve introduced an additional 3km of sweet single track (optional) for those competitors who really want to push themselves!

This year both the Race and Ride will depart from the Old Castlemaine Gaol. From the start line, perched high above Castlemaine, competitors and riders can take in the magnificent view over the township and the Castlemaine Train Station in the immediate foreground. The steam train will be in full view as the starting gun fires.

This year the event ties in beautifully with the Castlemaine Show and the Maldon Folk Festival meaning there’ll be plenty to see and do at either end of your journey. The Gaol will also be opening its doors on event day giving you a great opportunity to experience the dark history of this imposing building.

For spectators the best view of the event will be from the steam train itself. Watch your nearest and dearest put themselves in the hurt box while you sit in the comfort of a beautifully refurbished carriage.

The steam train will return to Castlemaine approximately 1.5hrs after the event. Book early to ensure you get a ticket for either direction.

For those of us racing (the Challenge) on the day, can we ride back from Maldon > Castlemaine, via the route & singletrack after everyone has finished?

In the opposite direction, Maldon back to Castlemaine.

Those doing the ‘ride’ might have stragglers, so I can understand that anyone wanting to ride back to Castlemaine after the event will have to wait a while for the route to clear...
