Rear tyre recommendation

hans dampf is an excellent all around tyre as long as you have wide rims.
On narrow rims the tyre profile becomes excessively rounded and the tyre then lacks any cornering edge/bite.
I ran them on crossmax ST's (19mm inner width) and I wasn't impressed.
Then tried them on Easton Havocs (23mm inner width) and its a great tyre!

After a couple of months on the Hans Dampfs I think I have found the perfect rear for me, I love it.

Had plenty of chances to try it in the tacky and even wet stuff, now trails are getting dry and dusty and I still love it. With the drier, dustier corners it breaks loose really predictably, much better than others I've ridden. Climbs like a beast too and rolls pretty well.

So Minion UST Supertacky 2.5 DHF as a front, Hans Dampf UST Pacestar 2.35 as a rear is my perfect combo.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

I like the 2.25 ardent EXO on the rear because they're high volume, cheap, grip well, roll well and wear slowly compared to the nn and rr that I previously had on the rear.

I agree with Horsey the Hanse Dampf needs a wide rim. I run sunringle charger pro rims which are 28mm wide and got them for that reason.

+1 for hans dampf,

using a 2.35 on the rear of my stumpy evo, I'm loving it, solid grip and predictable if it decides to slide
Has Dampf on the front - had a crossmark UST on the back for quite a while - needed a quick replacement and had a (tubeless) rocket ron spare - works great!

Anyone care to update as to what they're using this summer?

I'm generally riding in Victoria - either You Yangs or Buller area and just can't make a decision..... Think i either want a small 2.5 or large 2.35 upfront then can't decide if i should go 2.35 or 2.2 on the rear.

Riding with fairly wide rims and would like to stay UST compatible (sealant) preferable.

Looking forward to seeing what people have experimented with and have enjoyed (or disliked)

As above, I'm so happy with the combo of 2.5 DHF Minion UST Super Tacky up front and trailstar 2.35 Hans Dampf at the back. Every trail I've ridden they've worked well on, when they do loose their way it's predicatable, the rolling resistance isn't too bad, cornering is fantastic.

Alright. Ordered. Going to give it a try. Can't go wrong with a minion as basically one of the tried and tested tyres out there. As for the dampf - will be new to me. Might even make a good front tyre one day if i decide to go down in size.

Cheers.

Made the swap over to "2.5 DHF Minion UST Super Tacky up front and trailstar 2.35 Hans Dampf at the back" as suggested and was fantastic. Was good to go back to a minion which i've normally always run up front - albeit this time tubeless. As for the hans dampf on the back - felt great....

Going to run this combo until they're worn and hopefully keep repeating..........

Cross mark lust front ardent lust rear.. hitting about 75% wear bout ready to be binned.. so drifty and fun though. Very predictable on the loose soft trails I ride where there's not a lot of grip in the dry

Glad to hear it's working as well for you as it is for me. I put a decent hole in my hans dampf a week or so ago (too big to repair unfortunately) and have been riding a SB8 whilst I wait for a replacement HD to come in. It's really shown me how controlled the HD is as I've nearly killed myself a couple of times expecting a nice controlled drift out back and getting a flat out slide!

I tried a Hans Dampf trailstar front and pacestar rear over the weekend at Buller and they went pretty good.. running tubless at low 30's PSI and they stuck everywhere and rolled ok but a little slow.....
braking performance was very good and cornering grip was excellent.. could really rail some turns with predictable slide from the rear while the front just held..

would like to try a Minion up front but the 2.5 is just too wide and slow for my liking...

Yeah, I'm too wide and slow to worry about that!

You could give the butcher a try, I didn't get on with it but the tread pattern is very similar to the minion and they do roll slightly better.

Well I'm having no luck with Hans Dampf at all. Keep getting major blow outs where the tread seems to rip a massive rip which the sealant can't handle. Always right near a tread.

Anyone else had this with any schwalbe tires? Not impressed for the price. Makes a see
Session out at the Youies an effort if have to keep going back to car. Mostly riding Travs and Cressy.

Might have to go back to old reliable Maxxis tires front and rear as I've had not a whimper of issue up front.

Currently running a 2.25 racing Ralph thinking the wider thread compared to my old 2.1 would be beneficial...
I was wrong, rolling resistance seems to have increased with no significant/noticeable increase in grip... Def going back to either a 2.1 or a HD

(already run a 2.35 pacestar HD for the front )

I've not had this happen at all yet. I had one puncture from either a rock or some metal, pretty decent tear. Apart from that they've been sweet.

What pressure are you running/what's your weight?

I spent some time getting the pressure right for me, too much and they aren't as grippy. Too little and they squirm. Just right and they're sweet.

If you like the tyre and are having issues with the strength they've just released an enduro casing which should stand up to a bit more abuse.
