Reccomend me a saddle

So i have bought a second hand all mountain frame to swap all the parts from my DJ bike, and turning it into an AM bike (with a few changes). Now i need a new seat, becuase the saddle i have is particularly un-comfortable. There are literally 100 different saddles around which is pretty overwhelming when trying to find one to purchase. could someone reccomend me a good, cheap and comfortable saddle? (thats not I-Beam)

thanks guys

Can you specify what you think cheap is? Its pretty much the same story here, 100's of saddles, even more variety in arses. What fits one person, is hell on a stick for someone else, so the usual try a lot of different saddles out if you can rule applies. See if you can pinch a mates saddle for a bit and go for a decent length ride to see if you get on. Saying that here are a couple of my favourites.

FSA - it came on a road bike that I bought a few years ago, swapped it out and boxed it up. Now its on my fixie and its really quite comfortable. Could do with being a bit flatter in the nose but that's just me. If you see one around on Ebay I bet it would sell for next to nothing. Its not flash but its a reasonable weight, good profile and looks sleek. Not much more you could ask for.

Selle Italia Flite - I bought one on a recommendation and loved it, I have the standard Flite. Its supportive, but a little hard, and has a good turn down at the back which helps stop shorts getting snagged. I did have them on both the MTB and road bike, its still on the MTB. Could be a little wide if you are planning on dropping back off the saddle a lot and want to have a high seat.

New Favourite *Prologo Scratch Pro* bought this from Cell bikes for the ridiculous price of $59 when it was on sale, its still a good deal at the price its at now. I bought it because it was cheap and it matched the build scheme I was doing. Its heavier than stated running into the 240 area but it is supremely comfortable for me. It will now be my go to choice of saddles, this one is a keeper. You can get lighter versions of the same shape if the weight worries you.

Other than that try out the Fizik Gobi which people seem to like or even the Tundra, the Specialized saddles get good reviews as well. I would suggest having a peruse of Ebay for saddles and pick something up cheap that you like the look of, that way if it doesn't work out you won't have lost much money on the transaction. Probably the best way to test ride saddles if your friends don't have them. I'm sure there are some people out there who have spent a lot of money trying to find the "right" saddle.

It is a matter of horses for courses, a saddle some people find comfy may feel like a pig to you. I have been through a number of saddles trying to find the right one. LBS who is a specialised dealer measured me up using their dedicated gel pad that measures your sit bones and determines the correct size saddle. I purchased a specialised phenom saddle that matched my size and has been great. I was running a saddle too narrow and was getting numb arse, nuts etc, and any longish rides were almost unbearable. No problems now.

I have a WTB Silverado in great condition really cheap by the way if you are still looking, too narrow for my fat arse (135mm wide)

Fizik Aliante Gamma.
It's a roadie saddle, but that dosn't matter. It dosn't know when it's not on the blacktop.

I won't go into a full review but I will say that I have tried just about every popular commercially produced saddle by Fizik, Selle Italia, SDG, BBB, Selle SMP, among many aothers, and probably spent about $3,000 on saddles over the last 15 years and this is the one.

After all these years of searching I have finally found the only saddle I will ever use for the rest of my life.
I am currently stockpiling them incase they go out of production or change their production anytime in the next 20 years.

If my bike got stolen I would be sad for my lost saddle more than the bike itself.
I love it. try it first though. It may be terrible for you. I get them for about $89 of eBay.

I'm a big fan of the skinny saddles. The current crop of Fizik stuff is good but steer clear of the Gobi. I know of more broken Gobi's than unbroken Gobi's! I scored a cheap THE saddle from www.torpedo7.com.au yonks ago to replace the Gobi and it is a better saddle. On a bike I do many kilometres on I use a Fizik Tundra and it has stayed true enough and not lost any cushioning for two years.
I run a Specialized saddle on my demo but that means jack shit as you only sit down on a downhill bike in between runs to talk shit. ;)
I know of an awesome Selle Italia Troy Lee Designs saddle that is for sale. Now that is a saddle worth owning!

I like The lynx and the trailmaster for burlier saddles. I have ridden them both and they are super comfortable if you are looking for something more xcish check out the moon.

I ride with a Gobi and it's awesome. I've never had any problems as listed in this thread. In fact I liked It so much I bought one for my spare bike as well :)

I guess the fact that I am 95 kilos and rode (tried to ride) AM on a hardtail may not have helped. Still....

I found the SDG Bel-Air RL from my Reign and Bell-air ST on the Glory were pretty comfortable over long distances. Might not be flash to look at, but I'd pick comfort over looks.

I find the Fizik Tundra 2 so good that i run it on all 3 of my bikes: roadie, XC and DH. Light and super comfortable.

Fizik Aliante Gamma.

Harmonix, you've nailed it with that recommendation. There's also the Fizik Aliante Gamma XM which kind of looks funny but is a tad softer on the small chatter. I also run the Aliante Carbon with the carbon rails on the fat bike and that has a bit more give on the big hits but kind of locks you in place and not as easy to move about on compared to the XM.

I used both of these saddles on the Simpson Desert Challenge this year and was lucky to be one of the few competitors who didn't have to have a bit of a cry before getting out of bed in the morning in readiness for the pounding ahead. There are very few saddles out there that will let you race over corrugations, rock and sand for many hours on the bike day after day without making your bum bleed. The Aliante is one such saddle.

wow, I thought ide get some responses but 2 pages! thanks for all the in-put! I have tried the SDG's, ive never liked any of them to be honest. Ive used a WTB silverado (i believe) and i bent it. Ive made a tally and it seems (among this thread) that the Fizik Tundra is the most popular. I might try snap one up off ebay as suggested, I recon thats a top idea :clap2: My budget would be maybe $60? is that reasonable when it comes to second hand saddles? I'm yet to decide if my ass likes the narrow or fat saddles, i haven't used enough of them to make a decision, saddles (for me) are one of those things you just overlook when it comes to bikes.

thanks again guys

Go the Tundra! $60 should see you right, I got a brand new Tundra 2 off here for $60 posted. I think a lot guys who buy new bikes with them swap them out straight away (don't know why - probably a fashion thing...) and want to offload them asap. Especially Giant buyers.

Velo Pronto Z1 best cheap saddle i've tried, only about $30 $40ish. I've done a few off road tours on it and hade no probs at all. It now lives on my all mountain baby.

I bought a Selle Q-Bik for $50 18 months ago, has been awsome.

100km enduro and heaps of training and no complaints, numbness or signs of it falling apart.

I will say that a GOOD pair of nicks under my baggies also helped.

Yes I agree there is way too many options. If you can get an idea of what width your saddle needs to be (measure the distance between your sit bones....the things you feel if you literally sit on your hands) it could make your choice a little easier, at least a starting point on weather you need to rule out the narrower jobs or don't need to go for the wider ones!

For a wider saddle I've found the WTB Laser V to be good....as much as I'd love to buy some of the sleeker racier looking jobs, this ones not flashy looking but it's not ugly either...comfort over fashion I guess!
