Remote Control - Goodness (all RC Stuff)

My piece of RC goodness:

I'm a yachtie in full-size life, so what else would my RC toy be? It's bigger than it looks; hull length is a metre, and from the bottom of the keel to the tip of the mast is more than 2m. The overall design is based on the early-2000s International Americas Cup Class yachts.

I've had this for close to 20 years. It was made by a mob called Beili, who I'd never heard of before or since; the fibreglass hull is well made, but did need some sealing & fairing around the keel during assembly. However the rig is terrible! The mast is a noodle that needs a lot more support; it bends so badly in the wrong directions that you need to just about go the opposite to how you'd tune a life-size mast! The non-existence of a properly-shaped sail cut doesn't help either, which also contributes to the contradictory setup.

Propulsion is entirely by wind, the RC bits only control steering and sail trim. Water and electrics don't play well together, even though the deck hatch is sealed when sailing, so several times over the years I've had to redo the leckies.

Probably the most concerning time was when the power switch on the controller failed while I was sailing on a decent-sized lake; it was switching off & on, so I only had intermittent control to get it back to shore. Another time, on a more constrained waterway, the boat got overpowered by the breeze and I lost steerage and the boat parked itself in the reeds on the opposite bank with no way of getting out remotely. Fortunately there's a footbridge across the river very close to where I was sailing (and stuck), so retrieval wasn't too difficult, but the walk back on the footbridge next to the freeway with a toy boat under my arm was a bit embarrassing.

I had a pretty big RC collection 10 years ago, about 6 planes, 5 helis, 5 cars.
No time anymore, just the Tenacity buggy and my stunt plane which is 7 years old and still hasn't been crashed.

I have a Kyosho Viper RC boat and I would like to get it running again, purely for nostalgic reasons!

After some discussion with a local RC shop and some initial enthusiasm from the bloke working there about helping me getting it up and running "bring it in, let's see if we can get it going" the tune changed when I brought it in. It was a bit odd.

I was thinking/hoping that I could scrap all the old gear and drop in all new stuff. Is that possible? I have no idea and admit I have yet to probably investigate.

servos / receiver / esc / battery / controller is all you need - you can’t break it connecting it up anymore - connect it all outside boat to understand and get working then mount it

Have a look at this website - It will give you the basics and then from there I am sure we can all figure it out

You need to know what you control on the boat - The motor comes from the ESC steering will be a servo and then depends on if you have trim or not for a second servo - The ESC needs 1 channel and each servo needs a channel so 2 servos 3 channels etc

Thanks for the above info - the gear on it is all so old/stuffed I think I need to source new gear. No trim - just throttle & steering.

I know nuffin about RC - but I like looking at the videos esp the ones from Europe where the shows are set up like an off road course or a shipping yard etc

Gliders are my thing - this is an RPM, a molded carbon and glass 1.8 m T tail, no dihedral, 5 channel plane (no rudder) made for Dynamic Soaring (DS)
Made by a bloke in QLD, Kev Bennet it’s a very sturdy plane capable of silly speeds.
I haven’t been flying much for the last couple of years due to concentrating on my target shooting so sold this and kept a standard “frontside” layup version hanging from the ceiling of my mancave and will get around to fitting it out eventually. I also have a Dreamflight Ahi which is a lot of fun.
Check out Dynamic Soaring on YouTube if you think gliders are slow and boring

This reminds me I have a bunch of old 6s lipos in the garage I haven’t looked at in a few years. Doubt I even put them on storage charge. Bet they are a tad puffy by now and considering the garage is not insulated probably lucky one hasn’t gone bang.

I still have my HOTSHOT (it's broken though), but an old friend who I grew up with surprised me recently with this! A Tamiya FOX which I gifted him many years ago, now mine again!
Dug a couple out of the garage the other day but didn't have time to check batteries/get them running. I assuming I need new batteries as it's been over 10 years since I had them running.

Wow some great cars here that look like originals - That Sand Scorcher Buggy is still considered the holy grail of paint jobs - I noticed they lowered the blue line from the "Box Art" - the Box art is considered to be one of the hardest due to the blue meant to be starting halfway along the door handle - Many a post in forums about these being so tricky still.
