Just curious about how many let their kids ride to school?
Today was National Ride2School day and it would be fair to say that there are more than double the number of kids bikes parked in the bike shed than normal at my son`s primary school.
If you do let your kids ride to school, at what age did you think they were OK to do so?
Do you ride with them?
Would a 'Pedal Pod' encourage you to send a younger child of to school on the bike?
My son is 6 and I`m not happy to let him ride by himself yet, but we try to ride the 5km to school twice a week when weather permits. We have a great time together.
Cheers

I'm still in high school, year 11, I don't ride to school but I've got a few mates who do. One rides from Springwood, which is about a 25k ride, he's been doing that since he was about 14 or so. I've never gone to a school which I could ride a bike to, but our local public school supports it, there are signs everywhere warning drivers about kids riding to school, and there are usually a fair number of kids every morning riding without parents but with other kids on bikes, or even walking.

we rode to school today ... well I pushed them up the mutha hill and the two kids did the rest.

we are only about 1k maybe less from school and its all foot paths ... so no biggie.

Mine aren't ready to go solo either ... especially since we are just getting off trainers. be interesting to see if they make the hill ride back home though:cool:

We rode to school today. My wife, daughter and myself.
Spent a good 20 minutes checking out the kids bikes in the racks haha.
Those little giant XTC 150's are awesome!

I wouldn't let my little girl ride by herself yet.
She just dosn't have the bike handling skills or confidence to troubleshoot and improvise on the fly.
When she get's older I will, but she's only in kindergarten so there's no rush.

My 10 yo is the Ride To School co-ordinator!

He rides rain hail or shine about 3 ks to school and loves it ( on his Giant XTC 1x6)

i started riding to school in grade 3(im in grade 12 now) and the parents were abit nervous at the start and use to come with mefor about 5 times, then they let me go and have been doing it since

Ride to School

My boys(13 & 9) ride to school most days and have for many years. Mondays I try and ride with them stay for classroom help, then ride back in the arvo to ride home together. (Though today it's supposed to rain!! Sunny now!! and I drove them). We have around 200 students and on any day there is probably 3 to 5 bikes in the rack!!! The boys ride either DH, XC, dirt jumpers or BMX to school depending on their mood.

We live about half a km away but we have to use a main road part of the way with no real path structure that links together at the moment. Maybe that's why most of the kids don't ride. I am constantly telling my boys to be aware behind them (as they jump anything on the way) and we have to cross at a T intersection with traffic 3 ways!!!

The thing that frustrates me is the parents driving to the other school who cut us off when they are turning into that street.

Rode with my 6yo last week. He has a Giant 150 as well & it goes a treat - the prior weekend had him testing it out around Forrest's singletrack.

Hoping to ride to school with him tomorrow too.

Sadly, it is 10km+ to my kids school on main roads with a speed limit of 100kmh. My boy and I investigated dirt roads to see if we could get there a different way, but it seems there is no way of doing it in less than 20km+. As he grows we may take that option, but at 5 he doesn't have the reserves to deal with that and a day of school.
Over the distances involved, I'd like him to be at least 10 or older before I turn him loose by himself. Alternatively he could ride with his older sister in a year or two, but she is not as motivated.

"Part way is OK"
I`ve used this slogan a few times to help other parents to consider letting their kids try riding to school. Would this work for you?

Cheers

I let my son and daughter ride to school when they want to. Admittedly we live less than a km from the school so it's no big drama. They are 8 and 11 respectively. We have done a number of rides on the roads in our area and and have built up their confidence, handling skills and street smarts enough to let them ride on their own.
