ridin fakie

i was wonderin if ne 1 has done the mod of taking off ur 2 bottom gears of ur casette and puttin in spacers so when u shift to the gear u can fakie wit out pedalin...i did it and can go backwards for ages...has ne one else done it and found a way it shift backs to your gears easily

haha that's really clever! When I make my poor attempt as roll outs on a BMX you have to pedal backwards and it's pretty tough. It's like everthing you ever learnt about riding is reversed, feels un-natural :)

Yeah pedalling backwards is more useful than a neutral gear anyway, cos you can crank out of the turn and keep your speed up.

Just to echo what else has been said here, learn to ride fakie properly. Like Ryan said it allows you to revert easily, and is better from a skills perspective.

As for the system itself, it is a clever idea, but it's still a butchers fix and as such will never be completely problem free. If you're willing to persist and fiddle around with it (probably kill some parts in the process) you may be able to get it working well, but you'd be better off spending that time learning to back pedal, it'll be better in the long run.

I can ride fakie both ways naturally, but that's cos I ride BMX.

Learn to ride fakie and half cab while cranking, and then learn to do both without...half cabbing without cranking takes A LOT of strength to pull up and spin...

Watch the vid "JIB" by Thor Wixom. There's heaps of footage of Von Williams who did the same to his Ellsworth Specialist.

i am 'donplayahate' till irealised i spellt my name wrong...
ok for you people who like in gear, how far in a straight line can u get when u are pedallin whilest riding backwards.....
yes thankyou....then when u are free spinnin..all u do is hop the back wheel u can ride backwards forever..and there are hubs (freespinners) that use clutches that dont engage when you ride fakie... and i would much rather a 12mm thru axle hugi freeride..and it looks better when u fakie wit out pedallin
i.e watch jib..and there is one bit in kranked 5 inthe street section as well
it looks so much smoother when your not pedalin..
if ne 1 knows st marys catherdral...those ramps i rode up there shifted to the spacers then fakied in a straight line to the five long stairs in front of the church...

take your chain off. roll down a slight hill, bunny 180 and see how far you can roll backwards, it's not that much easier than backpedaling. i'm sure all those riders in jib etc can do proper fakies for ages anyways.
learn the basics first that way you wont become equipment dependent.

its easy as hell when u feel bit off balance u hop the backwheel try it..u can go for ages it like when u pedal kick u do the small hops to rettain ur balance same theory.
eh when i shift down to by lowest gear the chain runs on spacers...i can fakie pedalin or not..i can 180 endo to fakie to half cab, but when u have the spacers u can go fakie wit pace its just choice whether u want to pedal when fakieing or not, ill get a picof it..it wont be good quality though

This "neutral" is a bit cheap imo, it's an easy way out, you might as well learn to ride fakie properly, and there'll be no need for hacking components.

its instead of having a freespinning hub...how many ppl have tried fakie witout pedaling..look at jib heaps of the guys in that dont pedal when fakieng its just preferenc i guess...

could that be due to the fact they the video (jib) and some of the riders are sponsored by block-8 who make a comerical neutral gear.

I can land fakie when abubac'ing a 4.5ft quarter, and when front wheel airing out of a 5 ft quarter no worries at all.

Just like going forwards the faster you roll fakie the easier it is to keep your balance.
