Riding Rotorua NZ area what you reckon??

Split enz is awesome. A 5" bike will give you great access to just about everything other than National DH. Even a hard tail would be awesome. So so good!

sweet as

just got back.....unbelievable....fav's were huckelbery hound into little red or corners...be rude not 2 sweet as well..
Got a nice little diversion to Makara peak in Wellington..more XC specific but nice long descent from the peak down ridgeline..

Smash that piggybank and get on a plane..not hot..not cold atm. You will be thinking about how you can staythere after a week.......choice bro

How much altitude to the trails have?as in are the tracks rideable during winter or are then snowed over?

Upto 700m+ if you are keen. There's shuttles as well I believe they run on weekends and 5:30pm onwards, weekdays.

I quite like 'A trail' and 'Be rude not to'.

I'm bummed I miss a few favourites mentioned here, cos I was riding with my gf who wouldn't ride most of the grade 4 stuff.

...
Here's my Rotorua video from last year, it should give you a good idea on the type of riding you'll encounter over there (it will also show you how to spill a whole jug of margarita and how to hit a tuna can off a gravity-dropper seatpost)

Awesome movie Cronar! Makes me want to go back there and ride ride ride! I've been putting off a gravity dropper, but now I really want one! :p

I also really liked the "home" track, that takes you back out to the Redwoods info building etc. Fun little track to end the day.

You really do need a few days of riding to explore the whole park and will also let you go back and ride your favourites another few times :D

yeah rotovagas is the bomb.. i have to get back there one day and spend a good week.. some of the most epic trails ever

Well sounds like im gonna have to plan a trip over there for the end of this year or early next year, go down to taupo for a ride to. Want ot take the wifey aswell so she should be able to have fun on alot of the trails too, sounds like they are not to technical whereas i think whistler might be a bit more advanced, going off what ive read anyway.

I hate thread like these.
Just reminds me that 10 years ago just as I was getting into MTB, had a job in NZ driving tourists. On average I would be in Rotorua at least 1 night a week, with enough time to ride out to the trails and be be back in time for dinner. Or if lucky a compulsory day off there.

Now.....out to the office each morning and back home for family duties each night.

Moral...when you have a good thing going grab it like a 14 year old in his bed at night and don't let it go.

There are too many trails to talk about - I got back last week and the place blew my mind. I took a trance (with 140mm forks) and my partner took a reign (with fox 36s) so I reakon a 5-6inch travel bike will do you for all the riding you can handle - xc, trails and a bit of DH.

My fav's are
A-Trail and Tickler
hot X buns and old Chevy for a xc ride
Bunny jugs
Eastern Spice, North Face and Turkish delight are great fun
Billy T and G-Rock (catch the shuttle and ride up another 100m or so)
and of course Be rude not 2.

The locals are all really friendly and we had a few take us to thier fav trails. Dont worry about the rain - most trails handle it really well and are designed to shed water quickly.

We had a week there and could easily spend another week with the odd day trips out to Taupo. Oh and after a day - you dont even notice the smell.

+1 re a clean bike and shoes - going both ways. And make sure you tape/wrap your bike well to avoid damage during transit.

If you want info on the shuttles go to www.southstaradventures.com .
My favourites are
jumps track which is easy enough for anyone because they are all tabletops, national dh which is the race track, billy T, split enz, corridor, eastern spice and Hot x buns.

and check out riderotorua.com for trail info.

A question for those of you who've done the Rotorua thang: rough costing for a 5 day trip from Sydney, inc airfares, accom, expenses etc?

We just booked from Brisbane - A$370 return with Virgin, A$250 per person for 4 nights camper van.

for the people that have done Rotarua - is it worth using a guide service or just grab a map and go for it.

There is an information office in the park where you can buy a detailed map for $5. That's all youll need. Shuttles run there during school holidays and weekends.
