Rigid to Front Suspension 26 inch => crown to axle difference?

Hi All,
I currently have a mid ninety's Kona hardtail that is rigid. I am looking at rebuilding the bike with front suspension for the kids. The current axle to crown (measured from middle of axle to where the lowest part of the headset attaches to the steerer) is 41.5 cm. Most of the forks I am looking at are around 47.5 from axle to crown. What will this do to the geometry/handling of the bike? I guess this will slacken the head angle but I am guessing a ninety's bike has a pretty steep head angle anyway, so maybe not a bad thing? Your feedback is appreciated.

Hi Daniel,
Thanks for the reply. I think the rake of the the rigid fork (off a 90's Kona hardtail) is somewhere between 40 and 45 mm ( I am measuring from 'the straight line of the fork steerer to the middle of the drop out/axle). The rake of the new fork is published as 38.1. What effect is this likely to have? Thank you to any one who can help me with this.....
