Long ish ride the other day.. 1 1/2 hours.
New bikes are good.
29er is perfectly fine and doesn't look stupid.
The gearing is great, the big back cog makes climbing as easy as it could be.
Black trails are all well and good but they should be rideable, not have stupid 1 metre deep creek crossing and corners that are so tight you cannot go around them
