I would normally be described as a tea totaller, this evening I was presented with a chance to try something unusual. This was a rum from Nepal, the Khukuri Coronation xxx. I never would've thought of Nepal as a rum producing nation.

The rum came in a khukuri shaped bottle, which caught my eye. It isn't going to change anyone's world, but it was an enjoyable enough drink. Quite smooth and sweet = easy on the pallet. There was fairly noticeable vanilla flavour as well.

This lead me to a little bit of Google...the rum was first bottled to celebrate the coronation of King Shri Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev in 1974. His reign as king came to an end in 2001 at a rather gruesome family when the crown prince went on a shooting spree.

Yo ho ho.

Usually drink rum with an alcohol ginger beer. Got put onto this combo a few years back by a mate. Virtually never drank spirits prior to that. Been giving the rum a bit of run recently.

First crack was Captain Morgan spiced. Was quite happy with it until the bloke in the shop told me it wasn't even rum. He got me onto Sailor Jerry. That stuff was quite good. Got through that bottle a bit too hastily. Next trip back to that bottlo, wanted to try something different. Old mate did me a good deal on a bottle of Bacardi Gran Reserva 8yo. Have been really enjoying it.

Have given Mount Gay Eclipse a go. Few people in this thread have liked Mount Gay. It's not cutting it for me. Are there many versions of Mount Gay? Is Eclipse one of the better ones?

Mount Gay Extra Old is the good one, all the cheaper ones are a bit lacking in character IMO.
Zacapa 23 is a favourite.
I get a bottle of nicer rum every now and then but always feel like I'm rationing it out, sort of guilty having one so end up buying something around the $50-$70 mark to drink instead. The good stuff just sits there longer !

No problem having the good stuff to enjoy occasionally amongst the not as good stuff. You drinking the spiced at all?

The Bacardi 8yo I'm drinking is quite nice on it's own. I was thinking it was getting up there a bit at RRP of about $70. Like everything though, the sky is the limit, and I don't know what the fuck I'm talking about.

What price does the good stuff start at?

...but don't go wasting the Zacapa by mixing it. You just sit back and enjoy it the way those Guatemalans intended, naked.

For a nice spiced rum try Baron Samedi. It is superior to both you have mentioned and a lot of other popular spiced rums, including the Kraken.

As for your second question, this is really a question personal taste. I've had customers fork over $15-20 for a serve of some refined aged rums only to say it's got nothing on Bundy...fuck you polar bear! I had a bottle at home recently with a full price of $25. Undoubtedly it was absolutely shit. The aroma was offensive and the flavour worse. Fortunately I had purchased it for flambe, and fuck me it was good for sweets. It also produced enormous flames. Try as many different ones as you can and you'll find what you like.

In my experience good sit down by the fire and savour rums start at about
$80 and go up from there, with Zacapa 23 as the bench mark for all others.

From memory the mount gay xo was mid 60s at Dan's, and well worth it imo. Might have some now.

Also check out rumratings website, some reviews are sh1t but other people's comments are sometimes worth noting when you see the same things repeated e.g an excessively sweet rum

Mt Gay XO is good. Aged in Bourbon barrels. it does give the rum an element of that flavour, esp compared to the cheaper mt gay rums.

Dan's also sells Ron De Jeremy reserve rum.

Tastes disgusting & has white floaty bits in the bottle. We keep a bottle in the bar for the unsuspecting punter too young to know who the Hedgehog is.

Definitely one for the top shelf - can just see people squinting to read it, shaking their head, then re reading it, lol

Poodle, have had a couple of krackens on ice - very vanilla. Will step up a notch soon I think.

No beer in house, have had to go down to te cellar and scrabble round for a red.

Good to see you're seasoning the pallet. Time to ease up on the ice and raise the budget a little...

Anyone able to recommend rum for mixing purposes. I would like something dark and something light. A friend suggested The Kraken and Barcadi.

Kraken is definitely a good dark spiced, Baron Samedi is also good until you start jumping up to the plus $100 bottles. For something left field with a taste that will blow your mind try Red Leg mixed with a good Ginger Beer like Fever Tree or Stoli.

I haven't had many dark rums, but makes slim difference if you are mixing. Steer away from bacardis, a flavoursome or spiced rum like the above or appeltons estate is a better option, imo

Here's a few of my suggestions. I used to work in restaurant with a specialty Caribbean rum bar and a few other linen napkins + fancy drinks places. I may have sampled a wide range...don't cheap out, you can tell the difference. Sailor, Morgan, and Kraken in my opinion aren't particularly good. The first 2 in particular have a watery essence filled flavour rather than a rum taste. The Kraken has a lot more body to it but also tastes a bit like whom ever added the essence slipped...and dropped it all in.

My favourites for under $100 (not factoring in sales)

-https://www.nicks.com.au/goslings-black-seal-rum-700ml (smells like Christmas!)
- https://www.nicks.com.au/diplomatico-mantuano-rum-700ml (new and quite smooth in the mouth)
- https://www.nicks.com.au/british-navy-pussers-navy-rum-700ml (rich. Lots of body. Drink it mixed with beer+limes+sugar as apparently that was the navy way back in "Old Grog"'s time as Admiral in an effort to reduce drunkenness...)

Grab this while it's on special. For that price it is hard to beat. It makes excellent mojito and it is pretty good neat as well:

These guys make good drinks. Pair this up with their famous bitters:

If you want to look at a few others:
- https://www.nicks.com.au/pampero-blanco-white-rum-700ml (make sure you believe the wank-tastic tales about why Venezuelan rum is better!)
- https://www.nicks.com.au/havana-club-3-year-old-anejo-blanco-white-rum-700ml (I've used this for work in a lot of cocktails it goes down well enough.)

If you want something that has a real rum lock to it, this one has it (to he'll with smooth!)

...and fuck it! Why not spend up while you're at it and get something nice?
- https://www.nicks.com.au/pampero-aniversario-rum-700ml (not as much body as other top shelf items but complex and enjoyable. The leather pouch is a nice bonus).
- https://www.nicks.com.au/ron-zacapa-centenario-sistema-solera-23-rum-700ml (it's normally over the $100 mark and a reliable crowd pleaser).
