Sealant thoughts

Can't find latex in store in Adelaide. Anyone want to go halves in a Barnes order? I have shit tons of coolant to share.

Many years ago, I bought some from AMC when they used to be on South rd, they've moved closer but look to be out of stock. Eckersleys art and craft in the city looks to have stock.

EDIT: Faaakkk. Found the post, 2008

I've been making my own sealant for a decade or so. I've tweaked the recipe a bit over the years but this is the current mix:

1L latex (craft supply off eBay)
Big bottle of slime ~800ml (pretty much just for the chunky rubber bits)
1.8L water (straight from the tap is fine in Canberra)
300ml Windex (or similar window cleaner) for the ammonia. The ammonia is what stops the latex from hardening. If your sealant is drying too quickly add more ammonia. The ammonia can react with your alloy rims or nipples so make sure you tape the rims properly.

Mix the Windex into the water first. They add the latex stirring vigorously. Chuck the slime in last. Mix well.

Makes about 4L. Costs less than $80.

I used to add proplyene glycol but any time I did the mix would form a sealant booger. Without the proplyene glycol it will form a nice thin layer coating everything in the tyre when dry. This helps to keep things sealed up even when the sealant has run dry.

Windex aye?

That will definitely lower the cost per litre considerably. Much more affordable than PG.

Good to know.

What's the rubber glue of choice?
Glue2.jpg

storing glues of all sorts, sealant etc in the beer fridge at a constant temperature
Started doing this a few years ago as well. Seems to make a difference - also with vulcanising glue drying out - instead of going bigger I got 20+ small tubes from Ali a few years ago and pop a new one if the last one has dried out (even after being in the fridge). Once that runs out I'll switch to the Loctite as sometime the vulcanising glue can be a little hit and miss on tyre casings and might not fully stick. I also keep sealant and my big bottle of chain lube in there as well (not sure if the lube benefits from the fridge tho).

You use the same loctite like I have above or a different one?

Jizzed up my newly built 27 mm internal disco wheels. Hope hubs I got off Rusty years ago and db spokes.
2 litres for 18.00 dollars cost . Used 500 ml thickened latex and ethylene glycol I had lying around and water. Bio glitter leftover from kids party. Needed more something, so took fj’s idea onboard. Made it more ‘race’ though with soft compound rally tyre and go kart slick rubber. And some rubber fuel hose as I read somewhere to add fibres.
Sealed up first time.
160 ml per 700 x 50 tyre.
I have always seemed to go through a fair bit of sealant on the trail. Am forever cleaning goop off frame when doing clean and service.

Is there a reason for so much sealant for each tyre?
