Seriously, GET OFF THE F*CKING TRAILS, you idiots.......

IT's all about the time of day you get there (I was later than intended today). But that was the only prob I had the whole ride. It's "crowded" there now, but I've been lucky enough to not have too many incidents. Had enough to know not to ride there during peak hour though.

Once I've rebuilt my fitness I'll ride out back more as I don't expect too many fools out there.
Have done a quick lap twice this week, has been virtually deserted…

Forestry SA allow dogs off leash in certain areas, as long as they are under effective control. These are generally areas with 4wd track access and not single tracks. Not sure what other states forestry rules are? I take my dog to these areas 3-4 times a week and have seen about two other bike riders there in the last year...a few horses though.
I've seen quite a number of dogs up at Prospect Hill. Roughly a quarter responsibly managed/contained, walking fire trails, half walking fire trails, but dogs roaming all over the joint, and a quarter on the singletrack. Those ones really shit me, because they are invariably spooked by someone flying into their little playground, putting both the dog and rider in great danger. Owners either berate me to SLOW DOWN, or casually remark, don't worry, s/he's OK. No, the dog that I almost ran over, if not for extreme evasive action, and pure dumb luck is not OK.

I really like seeing dogs get to enjoy this area, but the number that are well trained, and under control is small.

Just as dickhead roadies give all roadies a bad name, and endurobro's give mtbers a bad name, ignorant, selfish dog owners give responsible dog owners a bad name.

As others have said, it's not the dog, it's the people.

Must say I've never been to Prospect Hill..for the very reason that its known for mountain biking. The Onkeeta Trail is pretty quiet, and is very rare to bump into anyone else on a bike there.

looking at the map, Prospect Hill isn't a green (off leash) area...but I'm not sure where the trails are there.

Canberra local trail.
I havent come across many people, but there was a segway looking thing, a guy with a full face on, i think it was a Kingsong Electric Unicycle as had chunky tyres and a decent pad next to the legs.
Are all the trails two way?

A majority of them are in Canberra (or at least on the parks planning they are supposed to be), Stromlo I think is a different story (bigger budget as its funded by ACT tax payers) but that's about an hour from me.

Have a look on Trailforks. PH is still closed at the moment anyway, while forestry trash the joint. Will be a stack of new trails going in soon. I imagine predominantly easier xc stuff. Major disadvantage will be that it wont have the luxury of tree cover.

What trail is that?

Yep, I saw a whole crew of those guys on the electric uniwheel things, along with elec skateboards and other contraptions. They were getting ready to do some kind of night 'ride', from the looks of it. This was about a week back at Stromlo, about 10+ guys and one girl. I guess at night it's fine as you'd spot their lights a mile off and the risk of collision would be low. But I'd get annoyed if I cam barrelling around a bend and there were a bunch of guys trying to hop over a rock on dork wheels.

Sometimes I feel like an arsehole the way I don't want to share the trails with others. But then I think of all the work MTBers, including myself, have done to build trails, do advocacy work for funding, attend maintenance days, etc. etc., and I feel that we've earned the right to claim ownership of these facilities and demand that other conform to our preferred modes of use - like fuck off with the uni-wheels, horses, dogs and slow-arsed families who's kids can barely stay upright! Those fuckers need to either stick the facilities that were built for those purposes or put in the hard yards to get their own facilities built.

Copy..they just moved out of the Onkeeta Block, but was still enough room for us to get a lap in on the remaining while they were there. Quite happy to stay over that side away from PH..not that much into crowds.

Just the other side of Onkeeta, you've got Kanga's, gate 19. That will raise your heart rate a touch.......

The weekends adventures took me through a logged bit of trail a bit sad to see the state it's in. Also got sunburnt on the face which was a first.

That's at Sparrow (it's partially logged at the moment which has limited the trails to be ridden) but there was a similar sign at Majura for a while.
I agree about the trails but with Stromlo, Part of the package of purchasing a house in the newer suburbs there was the absence of a decent size backyard, but that Stromlo was your 'backyard' and being government owned I guess it's a risk vs reward and all the usual liabilities that they have to cater for now with the surge of the people. Stromlo is heavily marketed as a mixed use trail and even the rules state those walking and on horseback have right of way.
I enjoy the trail days at Majura, clean up days at Isaacs etc but I've heard many people say that Stromlo is the only one you should ride after rain as it's taxpayer funded.
In saying that I have only been to Stromlo once or twice this year in peak times as it's about an hour from my house, so an effort to get there.

Given the hammering some of the berms take after rain you shouldn't be riding there either.
Bruce Ridge or Jerra are the go-to after rain as the trails have a more rock base and don't cut up

Yeah Stromlo holds up well to a point, saw someone driving out of there on the weekend after the rain with a mud caked bike and thought what a kook.

I thought I would have a look at Stromlo on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised at how dry it was. I was out the back and it was drier than its been in months with the creek on Pork Barrel not running at all. How it was out the front on the new section I have no idea but probably a mud bath if recent experience holds up.
