Given the fleet is grounded due to Stage 4 restrictions I’ve been (mis)using my time going through old photos and have stumbled onto an idea – showing you all my old crap bikes, sharing some unasked for nostalgia, providing evidence of how dangerous the for sale section is here and giving you a chance to be amused by some truly alarming geometry at the same time (and if you’re thinking I nicked this concept from one of Dirty Nomad’s Gear Rants you would be correct).

So don the rose tinted glasses and join in. I’ll go first…

…with this. Look at it. Bathe in its ungainly magnificence. This was my first “proper” mountain bike – a 2008(?) Giant Alias in snot green in the hugest size available. As a 22” frame it fit me(ish) but given my rank beginner level abilities at the time and its questionable geometry the addiction to mtb was slow to arrive. It was too short and steep to progress my confidence much (or at all) when things got gravity or techy so it eventually got relegated to commuting duties where it was promptly stolen.

I had much more success with this, an Avanti something. A cheap experiment to see if I liked 29ers (turns out I did a bit). Quick, agile and super fun, I liked this bike a lot. There wasn’t much to it really apart from working out the best gear ratio and it had the novelty of having possibly the only pair of Avid Juicy brakes that actually worked as intended. I pretty much broke everything else on it and turned the front wheel into a pretzel trying to (badly) jump everything in sight. Eventually sold to a mate after discovering that sometimes there is a limit to n+1, but the obsession had begun. It was time to have a go at building a bike from scratch….

Which led to this! A 2008 Intense Spider 29. Bought the frame from here and spent close to a year researching and sourcing parts, learning a lot but almost sending myself broke in the process. The end result was interesting. The frame design was driven by Jeff Steber trying to counter the perception that 29ers were inert tanks, so it had razor sharp handling (73 degree HA with a 100mm fork – pictured with a 120mm) and led to a lot of cockpit experimentation to get the right fit. Apart from that it climbed well (unsurprisingly) but was a touch… flexy and ultimately felt a bit too big. CB Cobalt wheelset sourced in one of those insane "we will actually pay you to take this" CRC sales but was not as shit as claimed elsewhere. Did firmly cement wanker status though. Basically classified myself as a rocket scientist when I finally dialled in the RP23 shock. So, sorted right? Not quite…

365997

Yep, it’s a Heckler. We’ve all had one (or a Halifax rattler equivalent if you’re partial to single pivot Anglophilia) and they are all awesome. I didn’t need another bike, but this appeared on here at a bargain price and some impulsiveness may have occurred. It came with homemade cable routing and was only clean for this photo. Was a bit of a bike of two halves, rear end was super plush yet responsive (big fan of that DHX Air) but the forks had the rigidity of a wet tissue and I never really got on with those M778 wheels. Santa Cruz build quality was evident by how well it performed given how often I either crashed it or avoided maintaining it properly (and I had some truly epic stacks on this, it was that kinda bike).

Sold to another mate and remains the only bike I’d be keen to buy back and whack a decent fork / wheelset on if only it was bit bigger (note stem length to “correct” this issue). Mate put a normal stem on it and a dropper, so it’s even more rad now.

Fast forward a few years, I was wasting time scrolling through the For Sale section here (again) and I found this….

365998

Which (again) was priced too well not to buy even though I could provide zero additional justification for obtaining it. I bought it anyway. An On One 456 (650b version) that thought it was a 160mm sled and encouraged equivalent behaviour. Everything – everything – about this bike was awesome, from the underrated af Marzocchi 350CR forks to the brick shithouse frame to the sublime component choices the previous owner made (the dropper did get warrantied but I understand that’s a part of routine maintenance for Reverbs). I sold it to fund a move interstate. Still miss it. Everyone should own a steel hardtail at some stage.

And that's it. Join me in sharing your own back catalogue of crap. Or don't. I might wash my bike again.

That's the pick of the bunch for me

Ahah, excellent. Love the On-One and the Heckler.

I spent some time trawling forums etc a while back trying to find photos of all the bikes I've bought/sold/owned/ridden over the years with a thread similar to this in mind. Always fun to look back and remember the golden oldies.

I won't go into detail, but they're roughly chronological. There are a few key ones missing from the days when we used to upload photos with ImageShack, which at sometime in the intervening years went to a paid service only and hid/archived/erased all the old free uploads.

Notable omissions include '05 Norco Team DH, a 4x/Slope/everything build '08-ish Heckler, NPJ East Beast DJ bike, Duncon Cane Corso DH bike, maybe others. Also left out the various road bikes...

As you say, the trading section here has always been dangerous for me, Facebook Marketplace I think only made it worse!

My back catalogue is basically my current catalogue, I don't like selling things ha ha. Just have to try and find photos of my one and only MTB that ended up scraped and a BMX I ended up loosing doing a river jump into the Yarra lol.

Going to need individual threads once the likes of @moorey @beeb or @Plankosaurus joint the party lol
Haha, I've only had 7 MTBs, just in quick succession! Loving the posts so far, the evolution from vintage to current is cool.

@Oddjob current fleet alone should be impressive.
I'm like you @Chriso_29er Can't part with them. There have been 2 I've let go of though. I'm to nube to the mtb sport though compared to most round here.
I did have a repco Hotham back in the day, I thought that was the best thing ever, at the time my brother had a repco tracer.

Has preferences
I'm far from a prolific or high end bike buyer, but here's my back Catalog. Sadly don't have photos of everything.

Ashes No.1 - 1988 Indi 500 (1988-92)
Bullmoose bars, indexed gears, caliper brakes. Piece of junk really but did a fair bit of riding at Mundaring and out the back of Byford one this thing. The shop owner told me it wasn't designed for jumping like a bmx so I blame him for my lack of ability to get air.

This is not my bike, but the closest match I could find.

366001

Ashes No.2 - 1992 Kojima Bigfoot (1992-95)
What a step forward. Cromoly frame, quick release wheels, alloy rims, schmick Zoom alloy bars and stem, rapidfire shifters, 18 speeds!

I can't find any photos but this was a beast of a bike, the rigid fork was a constant taper and not at all forgiving, and it weighed 30odd pounds. Threw on my first set of spds and went racing. First race was a XC at Mundaring; had no idea what I was getting myself into and faked a puncture just after first lap to get out of it without disappointing the old man (had driven me all the way there for 20 min of racing). Had some solid races after that, and even did alright in my first dh race at Bickley.

Ashes No.3 - 1995 Wheeler 7800 (1995-96)
Zokes 50mm forks, STX-RC 21 speed.

Didn't have this one long. Just the one season of racing before trading it in for No.4 in late 1996. Was a heap lighter than previous bike and really nice for XC. Was riding most XC and DH races by this stage.

Don't have any photos of it, but spotted a similar one at Kalamunda this year (my was a champagne colour though).

366002

Ashes No.4 - 1997 Giant ATX980 (1996-2020):(
80mm dual suspension, alloy frame, v-brakes, 24 speeds.
The love of my life. Died this year. I thought we were going to grow old together but it wasn't to be.

366003

366004

Ashes No.5 - 1998 GT STS DS1000 (2007-2008)
Thermoplastic/alloy frame, Rock Shox Recon 100mm forks, Avid BB7 disc brakes, Deore LX 27 speed.

A beautiful bike, rebuilt in a kind of retromod fashion with new parts from the time. Felt nice getting hold of a dream bike and it rode beautifully but a big stack (cracked patella and pelvis) courtesy of a front rim separating mid descent tarnished the dream.

Shipped it off to Romania via eBay.

Ashes No.6 - 2007 On-One Inbred 26er (2008-present)
Rock Shox Recon 100mm forks, Avid BB7 disc brakes, Deore LX 27 speed.

Bought this in 2008 to replace the GT using the parts off that frame.

Did the Munda Biddi (as much as was built at the time) in 2008 and then used it as my main trail bike for a while. It now serves duty as my commuter/family ride/bmx/tow bike.

366007

Ashes No.7 - 2019 Norco Fluid FS1 (2020-present)

Bought (barely) second hand to replace No.4. Nothing fancy but does what I need it do.

taking a shit with my boobs out
Here's a few from the past, no roadies, CX or current bikes included, all moved on now.
I used to build old school BMXs, had about 25-30 in the early 2000's, thats where the forum name came from. I should probably have kept the ET Kuwahara but I started to ride MTB again and I had limited storage where I was living at the time, I started selling them... next thing they were all gone.

The only bike I regret selling of these was the One9 singlespeed, the IndyFab as the white MTB it used to be is now my drop bar gravel monster, repowdered blue and the white Chi FatBike is still hanging down stairs, it hasn't turned a wheel since the 2015 Simpson Desert race... but may get another go in the next few years.

Cable thief
This bike was my first introduction to modern mtb. Will leave out bikes as a kid. This bike also doesn't count as I bought it on a Saturday but returned it on Monday for an upgrade. I did technically own it but only rode it around the driveway. Bought this bike for rehab after doing knee wakeboarding(ACL).
20140111_152053_IMG_0820_88.JPG

This bike got me hooked on MTB. What started as bike track missions soon ventured to the Bush. I was hooked and modded most things on this bike before selling.
BMC te03(wish I didn't sell this)
Photos are of as I bought or first build them
20140114_140940_IMG_0825_60.JPG

These bikes I've kept.
This was my first dually. Bought as a frame and had it built up for me. Mostly second hand parts I sourced. Love this bike.
Santa Cruz bronson V1
20140918_171720_IMG_1072_60.JPG

Next was first +1
Think the story was this is my mates bike, oh he doesn't like it and wants a dually, I'd better keep it.
Showed me what an xc hardtail was all about. This got heavily modded. Went weight weenie for a bit. Is a surprisingly good allrounder for an xc bike.
Santa Cruz highball 13/14?
20171105_142957_IMG_2454_60.JPG

Bought a Chinese frame to see what they were like. This was built thrashed then stripped and hung on the wall for a while. I now have it as a commuter/bike track bike. Is a surprisingly capable xc bike. Well made, light (when first built it scraped in just under 10kg 9.85).
Xm carbon speed
20180202_111009_IMG_2576_60.JPG

This was definitely not a planed buy. It came up for sale super cheap. None of you bastards bought it so I had to. Is a hoot to ride and always leaves me with a smile on my face.
Pivot switchblade
20190802_175820_IMG_3780_60.JPG

Last but definitely not least. This thing is probably still my favorite bike. Modern gem hardtails are a hoot. This was bought about the same time as the pivot and was definitely a planned purchase.
Sat for a while before building but worth the weight. Looks porn to.
