Smashed up face

Went nicely over the bars today, which resulted in breaking my nose in 3 places, and stitches holding my lip together. Knocked me around a bit. Is wearing a full-face helmet ridiculous for general trail riding?

Took me a while to see you, you're blending in to the couch.
I reckon a normal lid is suffice but sometimes unusual things happen. Since you've smashed your face its now even more unlikely that you'll smash your face, unless you do, then you are likely to do it a third time. That's not a troll, that's standard quality management philosophy. Happy healing!

Boo boo bandaid is really great. Well played.

Coming from DH and mainly doing the Trail riding (Enduro, gravity, enduro, all-mountain, cross country whatever it's called) thing, I often wonder if it is any safer at all.

Riding smaller bikes, often tighter trails and usually as fast as possible does not equal safer. Full face could be justified but unless i was the one with the humorous bandaid on my face, I don't think I would ever stap the full face on for a few hours on the trails.

Heal well, and hope you find your new nose suitable.

+1 on the normal lid. I broke my nose once wearing a full face, you can't manage every risk and even if you do sometimes shit just happens. Goodluck with your recovery.

Loving that frowny face band aid!

As for your full face helmet, man up you soft sack of crap! Haha, no I jokes.

There's no point wearing a full face unless you plan on falling over all the time. Look at it this way, would you wear a helmet and put a roll cage in your car on the off chance you'll roll it one day? Unlikely. The biggest hurdle you'll face (and I'm assuming because you're asking about full face helmets) is mental. Chances are you'll be a scared little girl on your first couple of rides out, just suck it up and you'll be back to your old self in no time.

Heal up quick mate and try not to sneeze.

This is why giro came out with the Remedy helmet.
But mtbers generally snubbed it

I'd say a fullface for trail riding is overkill, but sitting here without a smashed face makes that pretty easy to say. I've gone OTB a lot in the last 20 years and never face planted, but if you're accident prone, it's going to be cheaper than new teeth.

What's the story behind the crash, was it just riding along, or where you actively progressing on some features or going extra hard?

If it wasn't for the heat and people yelling/honking at me from cars, I'd prob wear a full face everywhere... hehe

Seriously though, I have worn a full face on certain AM rides and it has saved me on a few occasions. I know of a couple of people that will wear full body armour when riding XC/AM and I know guys that'll hit the biggest lines with nothing but a full face and maybe knees :)

At the end of the day, you have to wear what you're comfortable with and accept the consequences. With ever improving design/technology allowing everyone to go faster/harder/bigger, everyone has to manage their own risk.

Hope you heal up quick and get back out there.... There's been many times where I've hurt myself and gone "I'm never going to do that ever again", then a bit of time goes by, and a few rides under your belt, and........ well, you know the rest......... Haha

I would have thought Full face too hot for normal xc. 10-20min dh is ok but doing say a 2 hr xc ride with full face would suck.

I've done some spectacular otb myself. Recently i've modified my jumping technique. I'm am trying it with no fingers on the brakes. The split second longer it takes to brake allows me time to move my weight behind the seat.

Wise move. I ate shit pretty hard from exactly that reason.

After reading this thread and seeing op's pics im getting a full face (probably a Spec Deviant)for single track riding!!
Who gives a F$@k what it looks like?
I like my nose and teeth where they are!

Yeah, ferk what other people think of my riding gear....
After i watched a friend smash his face on a bmx track (granted, it was the one and only time i saw him without a fullface) and end up with a broken nose, a seperated lip, and both arms broken, I bought a FF the next day.
I fell on my face once and was very lucky to not smash my teeth out, I almost always wear a mouth guard now. Aside from feeling better about my teeth, it keeps them from rattling over rough terrain and i don't clench my jaw as much which seems to help prevent riding headaches.

ugly crash, hope you recover ok.

full face or xc helmet aren't as important as riding within your limits and to slowly progress to bigger stuff so skill level is always higher than risk level.

we don't really have any neck protection and that's where an impact can transfer to so the real answer is to avoid these crashes.

I know accidents happen but as I've got more and more experienced I've had less and less crashes so you don't want to end up not being able to ride to your full potential because you are too banged up.

Just watching some you tube vids of You yangs and mostly everyone had a full face helmet!! The question should be, why wouldn't you wear one? No brainer for me!

mmm dunno, when I used to ride alot 3-4 years ago I was 100% fullface, but I never rode XC trails or back up, downhill tracks only.. And walk up.

now I ride up and down, I don't do the 'full down hill' trails but ill happily ride travs and cressys (albeit slowly, and blines!), and then back up the road or along track 2. And up dam run or something.

There is no way I could ride like that in a full face, I'd turn into one of those idiots I see riding around with helmet on their bars.

Horses for courses. If you do downhill yes. But for XC no.

MTB101 has hit the nail as it were. Its all about responding to, and managing risk (especially in relation to skill and experience).

DH = higher probability and outcome, hence the need for a full face (and perhaps neck brace) and body armour. Could also apply to AM depending on where and how hard.

XC = lower probability and outcome, hence open face and generally, no body armour (although I wear knee guards for a dodgy knee myself).

An XC wearing a full face indicates primary risk management failure.
