I am looking at buying SRAM X9 rear derailleur for my DH bike, but just not really sure of the benefits of cage length, either short, med, or large. Any main reasons would help, or breakdown for each length.
the reason for the smaller cage, is so that then you wont hit it on as many rocks or bushes as it sits a lot higher than the other sizes. im running the smallest cage on my dh bike and its awsome so much smaller than my old one that i think was a mid cage that i seemend to hit all the time and now with the smaller cage i dont.
Another thing to be aware of is that if you have purchase a short cage you may need to buy a new cassette as with the smaller cage it may not reach your lower gear(s), But if you are runnig a roadie cassette you will have no worries, thats not to say that you will need a new cassette, you just might squeeze it in. Talk to your LBS, they will be able to help you with your purchase.
