Suspension Setup Sag/Travel

Bit of a dig but I couldn't see the point of starting a whole new thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm currently running a huge spacer for small bump at home, but on the bigger tracks with bigger hits and longer rides it's smacking me around bit.

Will taking out the spacer reduce the big thump when I get towards full travel?

Trying to reduce the thump of big hits. It's a 100mm SiD so there's a limit to what I'll achieve.

I dunno man, NBD.

Is it a knock, or just a very firm bump? If it's knocking, maybe the bump-stop rubber on the air piston is gone (I'm assuming they'd have one, but who knows in weight-weenie world!).

huge spacer as in air volume spacer?

If so your ramp up is probably on its way up to the moon, and it feels like you are hitting a wall once you pass the midstroke. I'd suggest go a smaller spacer and more air so the fork rides higher and more linear spring curve.

A 100mm fork isn't really designed to be that sensitive off the top. If you try to set it up like that, you are sacrificing the other end of the travel.

Too many spacers OR no spacers and too little pressure will give you a harsh end of travel experience. Too many spacers will have it ramp up hard at the end of travel and no spacers with too little pressure will have the fork hitting the bump stops which also feels harsh. First thing is to confirm what camp you're in.

I've never put a volume spacer in either a 100 or 120mm 32mm stanchion SID, but I weigh 70kg. If you're 80kg then one spacer works well. If you're not a heavy weight then the fork is probably harsh because of too many spacers.

I'd start by getting rid of the spacers and setting the fork up with 25-30% sag. If you run <20% sag for that racey feel then its hard to really tell what the fork is doing. You can always decrease sag once its clear that everything is working OK.

Also, if your SID has the older non-charger damper then its possible that it has leaked oil into the lowers and that makes the hydro-lock towards the end of travel. It's always good practice to let all of the air out of a fork and make sure you're getting full travel before proceeding with any other tuning tweaks.

Charger 2.1, so that's not a problem.

I'm 89kg (shhh) and it's very deliberately set up for roots, rocks and small bumps because there are very few really big hits around home. It feels good and I'm using a good amount of travel, but I want to not have it smack me around as much on the 12/18/24hr rides I do.

I think what @teK-- said about hitting the progression wall is it, but I won't be on a "big" track until the end of August.

The 35mm SID with the charger damper on my Spur has never felt great. Correct sag and it wallows through the travel then any more air makes it feel harsher than it already is.

I've read a few threads on MTBR about the issues with them. If I rode the bike more often I would probably swap it out for something else.

A 120mm Mattoc or Pike would be a good replacement.

I thought you were USD forks for life! ;)

Funny how it goes, built up my Bfe and was stoked af, then rediscovered my love for moto and now I’ve only touched it when going on holidays.

Things change, bikes sit for a while then come around full circle. Until yesterday, I hadn't ridden my eeb in month but its going to Melrose tomorrow as I have a group to take around the epic on Saturday.

Gravel bike and Zwift have been the go-to in the past month.

Deviate is even more neglected, it used to get used regularly when my boys rode and mum shuttled us all. Planning a 2 week Tassie trip this year so will have to do something with the fork on it as I've never got that DVO fork right either. Might put the 38 I have here off the eeb on it for try.
