Tell me what tools I need to buy

So I’m behind on some maintenance and I need to buy a few tools before I can get cracking. I need your help to buy the right tools for the jobs below:

Head set cups
I ride a Yeti SB-66 with an integrated tapered headset. I would like to buy just one tool to remove the top headset cup and bottom headset cup but it looks like shops want time to buy two different sizes. Is that really necessary? Also, tell me about diy copper pipe and what size etc you use (if you do)

Headset press - same bike/headset configuration.

Bearing puller
I need to replace suspension pivots (including he switch) and also the bearing in e13 bottom bracket. It’s a threaded bb and the e13 bearings are 30mm. I read on here once about someone keeping the shell and replacing the bearings.

There are a few different size bearings that need pulling and I’m not sure if I need more than one tool.

Bearing press
Need to press all those bearings back in...

Bonus points
I have a Marzocchi 55CR fork and last time I had the air sling open I noticed the small foam ring that sits in a recess behind the air piston seal head was stretched. I need to replace it but there is no reference to it in Marzocchi material. Any ideas on the size or where I can just buy a good set of different size foam rings so I can replace it?

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Please let me know if I’ve left out important info that’s needed to answer my query.

Thanks!!!

Length of dowel and a hammer to remove the headset cups.

Two offcuts of timber and a mallet to install the headset cups

You'd be crazy to blow heaps of cash on specialist tooling for this job.

Sometimes, specialist tools prevent further $$$ expenditure, damage to bike, and posts to the fuckwits thread

The headset cup removers are about 25- 30 each (x-tools at CRC). one will fit 1" and 1 1/8th, and the other size will work with 1 1/2" cups.
($30 ea at cycling deal, but free post)

There's a few piston seal kits on ebay.

Marzocchi:
The 55CR actually comes stock without foam rings installed behind the wiper seal. Foam rings aren't a fussy item of the fork, so anything that'll fit in there easily will do the job. If they're a 36mm stanchion, get some Fox36 foam rings, or Suntour Durolux ones, if they're 35's get a pair of Rockshox foams.
I think we might be talking about different parts. Not the seals that the stanchions slide through but inside the air spring. It’s a foam ring that I think keeps the air seal lubed by holding light oil in it. It sits in a recess just behind the air seal.

Thanks for the links and advice on other items - I’ll have a look

Not everyone can wield a hammer like Thor.

Are you in Sydney?

Simplest option is to find someone who has all the stuff near you. Like me.

You need seperate headset removers for upper and lower cups. The good news is that you can use the 1 1/8 remover to remove the bearings out of the bsa30 cups.

You can also use the headset press to not only drive in your headset, but also your fresh bsa30 bearings with the right drifts.
Cyclingdeal is your friend, I have found their bikehand tools to be pretty good.

I hate Yeti's so your on your own there.

No idea re the 55cr but I would have thought a seal kit would include all the relevant foam oilers?

has some good things to say
I have found that PVC pipe makes for excellent bearing removal... especially 25 mm pressure grade.

And some of the joiners for said grade of PVC pipe make useful components for bearing presses. As do certain sized 1/2" sockets.

Thanks @Oddjob. I’m in Melbourne but appreciate the offer.

I’ll start with the headset and bb then think about the pivot bearings later i reckon.

Has a juicy midrange
If it's an integrated headset, removing the cups will destroy the frame, because they're machined or bonded into the head tube. The bearings fit directly in the frame, and lift out quite easily. If it has pressed-in cups, it's an internal headset, not an integrated one.

Definitely should have gone to specsavers

Just checked the 2014 SB-66 specs and it appears to be a ZS (44/56) headset, so that would mean pressed in cups. Is it a 2014 or earlier year @yuley95?

If that is the case and they're cartridge bearings, I'm not sure you'd need to be removing the cups if all you want to do is replace the bearings.

Sorry, wrong term. You are right that they are pressed in cups.

I’ve replaced the bearings a couple of times now. I was under the impression that the cups should be changed every so often as they can wear a bit. Is that bullshit?

Or perhaps important if you are WC level but not if you are just a weekend warrior?

Do others on here replace cups ever or just bearings? (Or is it a sign I need to upgrade to a new bike )

Just bearings unless water has corroded the cups or the bearing has caused damage some how (seized). Wipe the grease out, if they look ok they are. No need to do anything more. But you will need that CNC plasma.
