The 29er thread.

Finally

After months of having this, it's about time I posted it in here.
Redline Monocog 29er
17in, all Stock except for Avid BB5's, KMC Kool chain, 18t rear sprocket (was 20t, too easy) Shimano 520 pedals, Pro sealed bearing headset and just fitted today, Marzocchi MX comp forks. They're heavy as, but they were cheap and I didn't want to spend more on forks than what I had paid for the whole bike. They feel good in the carpark test, can't wait to get out in G'rock.

Don't expect more than about 60mm of travel but they're actually pretty good for the money and the trail figure is spot on. Though the same could probably said for the Fox F29, much more money but much more forky goodness.

I'm getting the full 75mm out of them, I must be lucky:D. But they bottom out with a clunk, maybe unlucky:(. Who cares, they are cheap and if I like the 29er with boing I'll get a better complete 29er. This is all to see if I like this 29er thing. (all good so far)
I really wanted the RST M29, fox or Reba's (in that order). M29's are not available here and RST in the states won't ship here or return emails and the other two are just to exy for this bike with both forks costing more than the complete bike cost me.

I just measured mine after a fairly robust ride last night and they're getting 72mm - Whoa! Find me a freeride park I'm set! No clunking though, they're remarkably quiet and hassle free.

The clunk is only on hard hits, if I do a wheelie and slam the front end down, doesn't happen dropping off a gutter. If it happens too much I'll pull them apart.

Any recommendations on tyre pressures for 29er's, I'm running 2.3 exiwolf's. I was running about 25psi front and rear it was good for the front but you could feel the back rolling around when pedaling through corners. I have gone for 30psi in both and see how that goes.

I'm running Exiwolves about 22psi F&R. If you're feeling the back squirm, go up as you have - but I'd suggest you keep the front lower to max that tractor-like 29er traction.

Damn you guys just wait until you see the mods I've made to my Ventana. Where's my bloody camera?

PS I've heard some really good stuff about the RSTs, I just got a set of the new Manitou Minute 29er forks but haven't fitted them to anything yet. We'll see how they go, but from all reports from the States a little tweaking and they come up gold. RIP 9 here I come baby...yehah

twentynineinches.com rated the M29 very highly, not quite as good as a Reba but as good as the Fox F29. And at $300 and something dollars US it was something that I really wanted to try (plus no one else would've had one). I would've looked at the Manitou but it only came in 100mm travel and the 'cog is designed around 80mm. The front is too high as is, even with the stem flipped and only 15mm of spacers. I will be fitting a set of flat bars next, probably the Salsa ones with the big back sweep.
As for the clunk, it only happened once when I did a 3ft drop on my way home, I will pull them apart at some stage, I just love playing with things!
Very smooth fork, a bit "bobby" but I can live with that.
Roll on the 8 1/4hr at Ourimbah!!!

Just came back to this thread and cannot believe I did not draw your attention to my number plate in the background of the pic of my Ventana.

The Manitou is now available in 80, 100, and 120mm in both qr and 20mm thru axle - I've got a 120 thru for the RIP 9 and am probably going to get a 80mm thru for the Ventana - I like stiff front ends, puny, pun, pun...ooh er doctor, etc, etc...

I would've been interested in the Manitou, if it was listed as 80mm on SCP's website. I didn't even bother ringing them, I figured if it came in 80mm it would've been there.

A 20mm front end would've been nice on the 'cog.

That is one very, very nice ride. Full rigid 29er SS is the way.

But you know the saying.

Steel is, has always been, and will continue to be... real.

Elvis.
btw: you coming to the 12hr tomorrow? you could meet/see your namesake...

Elvis - steel is real. Ever seen this? http://forums.mtbr.com/showpost.php?p=2298077&postcount=12.

As for 29ers... Here's mine:

Soma Juice 18"
KM Fork
Aireal EV-2 headset
LX/XTR front/rear derailleur
LX Hollowtech II crankset
XT SPD's
Tioga seatpost
WTB Deva saddle
Syntace Vector Carbon lo-riser
Race Face Prodigy stem
XT shifters
Avid brakes and levers
Specialized hubs laced to Velocity Dyad rims
Maxxis Ignitor F/R

As far as I'm aware there's only 2 of the babies in Oz... One of the pics is in commuter mode, one Alchemist took (I think) at a WSMTB race and the other is during the Sri Chinmoy Triple Triathlon...

Regardless of whether it not steel is real (and it clearly is goddammit) irreverent humour with ninja references is clearly real.

http://forums.mtbr.com/showpost.php?...7&postcount=12.

That is a genuinely funny post.

PS nice bike.

N+1 - You're right - very funny. I still laugh everytime I read it.

Setonz - here is the part of the post in question -

Some thoughts on steel
Well, it's steel, so of course it's good. Ninja swords were made from steel. So you know it kicks ass.

Things ninja swords were not made from:
  • aluminum
  • carbon fiber
  • dead cats.
Other badass things made from steel:
  • Guns
  • Bombs
  • Chuck Norris
Also steel is steely, as in steely eyed. So it gives you some good mojo, you can defeat your enemies with your demeanor.

In a pinch, steel can be magnetized, macgyver style, which might get you out of a fix if you had to turn your bike into a giant compass or something.

Also steel rusts, which is handy, because it's a good indicator when you need to buy a new bike. Since the only way a steel bike can be destroyed is by rust, and chromoly rusts really slowly, they last a long time. When the rust goes all the way through the tube, you know it's shot. Aluminum and carbon fiber don't do this, they just break, usually when you're riding down a volcano at 200 mph being chased by pirates who are mad at you for being a ninja.

Steel is real. Aluminum is real too, it just doesn't rhyme.
