The eeb quick or stupid questions thread.

Pre 2020 the e160 was arguably the best ebike to buy. Still great bikes.
I loved mine. Never missed a beat and the ride and handling was excellent.

What Eeeb or Eeebs would you rate as the best or among the best now, Ozz?

Too many out there to even name. I'm a bit intrigued by DJIs approach. The new kid on the block won't bow down to the seasoned players and are writing their own rules.
There are so many things that change between versions and are not cross compatible. An example would be gen 4 to gen 5 Bosch, different bolt pattern, battery not swappable, different controls, no power update for gen 4 and won't sell you a new motor.
Will be interesting to see what DJI does from now.
I was nearly set on adding the silver Amflow to my garage but have decided to hold on for a bit longer to see what comes out with the DJI motor.

At current, I think it sucks that Brose and Bosch are making their most expensive bikes more powerful than the midrange and below, yet trying to control the max power for industry... But max power is only for top end bikes. A $15k bike doesn't get S-Works or LTD treatment.

So typical of the bike industry.
It results in frustration and waste, waste ,waste.
Would love to see someone come along and simplify it like" Problem Solvers ".
Problem solvers have about 30 pieces just to deal with the Shimano fuckwittery of I spec.
Though I have an S Works and its great ,my generic ebike is so simple.
Can use any charger ,any battery ,any additions and over 25Km/hr and before all the safety experts attack, its ostensibly a Bafang 250w motor and does 37 km /hr flat out, me pedalling furiously.

Would you say that if someone was going to buy an Eeeb, that it would be worth budgeting for a spare motor, to fit when the OE motor shits itself? (Assuming a motor only can be sourced - I get the impression that they aren't widely available as spares)

I ride with a bunch of eebs only one guy has had to replace the motor when he smashed the casing open on a rock, a couple of specialised also replaced under warranty

I have 6000km on my Ibis, motor is now just out of warranty, apart from the 'Bosch rattle' when not under power, its been 100%. If something happened it tomorrow, I'd be happy to send it for reconditioning or replacement.

You cannot buy a spare motor new from Bosch, Brose, Yamaha etc.. you take your bike in to a service centre, they will assess, replace, send it away, sell you a new one but the old motor does not go home with you.

You can find them on eBay from smashed bikes or maybe leaking out the back door from bikes shops.

The biggest killer of motors is water ingress so I wouldn't worry about the motor, though you blokes on the East coast have had UK level rain this year.

ebikemotorcentre aus does an upgrade for my motor, though I don't have any issues currently, I would send it to these guys before taking it to a LBS now that its out of warranty.

Yeah although in my riding group we don't see the relative appeal, none of us has ridden one though

I would love one ! The Spech Levo has been up there in everyone's top 3 or top 5 for quite a few years now, there is no doubt its an awesome bike.

It was just a bit of eye rolling moment to see the most expensive eeb currently available as the winner.

Out for a spin, 8-9km in on a corner, while pedalling, massive pedal strike on a root. Surprising as I've had many pedal strikes and its never been an issue before.

Lost all pedalling ability, motor still working but not engaging the chainring, pedals still turning but not engaging the chainring.

Couldn't pedal at all as the chainring wasn't turning. So searched for a small rock and jammed it in between the crank arm and chainring, this allowed me to pedal without any power to get home.

Couldn't get the chainring off as it operates independently to the spindle, which is motor driven. Motor out, spindle in vice, chain whip on chainring, nothing working... so drilled a hole in the lockring to cut it off, which revealed the issue. Lucky I bought a extra lockring to carry in spares.

Stripped all the teeth from the spider, so luckily its about a $50-$150 chainring replacement rather than a $1200 motor fix/rebuild

Fat Tyre Festival in 2 days, so its head around the LBS's tomorrow with my pants down and pay full tote as I can't rely on express shipping from any of the online Aus shops :p

straw that broke the camels back or the pedal strike

Didn't only strip the chainring, the strike has cracked the sole of my shoe  Just been for a ride to test the new chainring and my right foot felt like it was pressing into the pedal, a quick inspection when I got home revealed the issue... been looking at fresh ones anyway but not paying $200 for them, hanging for EOFYS specials.

On good news, the old dampening of #steelisreal strikes again, the rattly alu bosch chainring noise has all but disappeared with the steelie fitted.

Well must of been one hell of a hit! I see Temu is trying to sell me MTB shoes - you could be the guinea pig :D

CrankBrothers Mallet Lace, this is my second set. First damage in 4yrs. Been watching out for the purple or green ones lately, wee bit more urgent now. These are still wearable, just feels different in the right.
