We could also change the way and what we farm.
That too. I have some exposure to water management policies in Australia and it’s …. dire. The cotton growers are the obvious example.

Water is massively overstretched as it is and things need to change anyway. And probably won’t…

Cotton

Rice

Two crops that quickly come to mind as not particularly Australia friendly.

I'm against high levels of immigration for the simple fact that our continent cannot support a large population. The habitable & agriculturally viable areas vital for food production comprise a very small portion of the place, and we need to balance that against conserving natural heritage as well.

On a wider scale, the planet as a whole is unsustainably overpopulated by humans. EVERY country in the world needs to take some action in limiting population.

I would like to see Australia and similar 1st world economies change their foreign policies to help foreign countries to improve the life for the basic people so there is less pressure from immigration for economic, political and people fleeing war/danger. If you don't have massive populations trying to flee their home due to war, poverty, corruption etc then we wouldn't have so much influx from the troubled parts of the world at the time.

Of course we are more likely to be trying to help secure areas where western businesses have interests while we leave the problem spots to fester.

And yet...they aren't alone.

Like Haakon, I too have had working exposure to water management policy and implementation. It's a wicked problem. Kill a river or feed the world? Which is really selling the problem really short.

The useful thing about cotton and rice is (despite the earthworks required) that they are annual crops. If the water isn't there then the farmer can grow a wide range of other winter and/or summer crops. Meanwhile, almonds...

But river systems are definitely getting killed. Though it's fair to say that the Murray has been an ecological zombie for 70 years already and what's left is more zoo than ecosystem.

But, if we kill agriculture at this scale for environmental reasons, the social and environmental upheaval (even in our cities) will be a whole new problem.

Soylent Green solves both problems at once.

Whilst in principle I agree, it's a pretty hard thing to do.

How do you make a corrupt govt stop being corrupt? They're the ones that call the shots and benefit from doing so.

How do you justify to people spending billions on schools, hospitals and infrastructure in other countries when our own schools and hospitals are under serious stress?

How do you ensure that the investment going into impoverished countries doesn't get taxed by the corrupt govts? How do you justify paying Australian taxpayer money as bribes to corrupt officials just so you get the clearance to build a post-natal health clinic in their country?

How do you do even any of that in Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Myanmar, DR Congo, etc. when the country is in war?

You are 100% right, it isn't easy. It would just be nice if we tried a bit harder (western powers in general, not Australia really)

Corruption at very high levels is the problem in most 3rd world countries; the money never goes where it needs to.

It doesn't help any when they have a social stratification that consists of a class-based society, because of what religion or tribe bloodline you come from.

Big mountains to climb to fix this problem.

Has there EVER been a more embarrassing photo of an Australian leader? Any persuasion? Any state?

This is truly FULL BOGAN.

Albanese is on the record as stating he is shit-scared of what Trump is going to be doing on the world stage.
Albanese has been desperately trying to gain a one-on-one meeting with Trump. And Failed.
Albanese heavily criticised Morrison for visiting a Trump rally a short time ago.
Albanese has been criticising LNP policies as being "Trump" like.

Yet - when he is actually in the same room as Trump, he grabs a selfie as soon as he can, and spits it to media ASAP. Being so Desperate to have a photo with a celebrity shows Albanese that he is looking up to the real characters in world politics, and Albo is just hanging around looking like he is one of the group.

As an Australian, I'm truly ashamed.

Really.... that's your take? Reads more like hyper-partisan baiting than any reasonable assessment.

I'm hard pressed to defend the Albanese Govt. Their first term was insipid and largely listless after the failed referendum, and they're showing zero promise of actually tackling any of the main issues (housing affordability, taxation reform, environment) that they've been gifted a mammoth mandate to do. But why wouldn't Albanese be trying to build a positive relationship with Trump, as odious as he is?

Trump is a piece of shit, but he's also pathetically easy to manipulate with flattery and has a long memory for those who try to defy him. I would expect our leader to put our interests first in building a good relationship with the <redacted> Who do you think our largest foreign investor is (hint it's not China)?

Agreed.

The selfie is incredibly cringey, but quite obviously has a purpose.

Just look at the way the UK are rolling out state visits with dinners with the king etc.

There's a lot of thought that goes on to this stuff. Whether it works is of course another matter.

Do you think a SELFIE is going to build AUS-USA relations?

How would it look if Macron or Starmer posted up a fawning selfie?

Embarrassment... 🤣 🤣

Out of interest, what are your news sources?
What Newspaper(s), if you read one.. print or online
What TV news & channel(s)?

I ask these things because you come across as a toxic culture warrior absorbing Lord rupert Murdoch's talking points, and then vomiting them out like the basic bros who litter the comments sections of 7, 9, The "australian" and sky "news" posts on social media.

At least I shit on the liberal party for good reasons - and Man, there are a LOT of good reasons to shit on the liberal party.
You just sound desperate to score points. It's rather sad. No more undeserved affectations of smugness for you!
