It's a pity no one in the current Liberal party actually pays any attention to what he (or Menzies for that matter) believes.

But they weren't apex political survivors. Menzies and Howard both saw the coalition as a broad church, not as a conservative party per se. They also both warned against the rabid right.

Although Howard empowered them by instigating the Tampa crisis as a dog whistle for the 2002 election.

I'm not going to defend the base opportunism of Tampa. But Joh Bjelke Peterson, the shoppies union, and reactionary Catholics were around well before Howard. The White Australia policy was also a favourite policy of the early Labor party. Another thing Howard vociferously opposed.

The Coalition is officially doomed. They have somehow managed to find even worse leaders than Dutton and Joyce.

Letting Nationals in safe seats - who don't mind whether they're in government or not - dictate environment and climate policies was madness.

Somehow the success of the Teals didn't tell them anything, and now this is the Coalition we have.

Silly, silly people.

Although, as much as I wouldn't vote for Canavan if he were in my electorate, he's probably the best pick to stem the bleeding to One Nation. He's damage control rather than some one who can regain losses to Teals.

Oh for sure; my comment isn't specifically about what's happening now, rather mistakes that were made and escalated over the post-Howard years that have led the Liberal party and coalition to the situation they're facing now.

Let's not forget that Howard proposed an ETS in 2003 - you wonder where the Coalition would be now had that been implemented at the time.

I don't know that National voters are charging towards One Notion. Though I wouldn't put it past them to give One Notion more of a go in the Senate - they are a bit dim like that.

Mind you, if they are, then it's just going to make the odd National seat in NSW and Victoria vulnerable to a conservative independent...
