Mind you, the Maori were a fair bit more "assertive" than the locals here. Imagine being on Cook's ship and seeing a Maori war canoe coming at you with a bunch of pissed off Maoris on it - you'd be shitting yourself!
I bet there would have been more than one :)

For the learned I'm pretty sure history reveals how that arrogant cock would respond to something like that quite well. A fitting end.

You do realise your statement isn't far off saying "I don't see any fences, so terra nullius it is!"?

I can't see a good, or even remotely legitimate reason to vote no and I can see a number of good ones to vote yes.

Even the one reason that may have some legitimacy about putting treaty first is not easy as I understand it from what I've heard. There would need to be a number of treaties in each state.

The old "it won't make a difference on the ground" is not proven and can't be until it's tried. How does treaty first make a difference on this?

So in my own simple interpretation voice will enable treaty and without both we're not adressing truth.

My own birth father posted some racist filth about aboriginal people with all the colonial tropes and I commented but he seems to actually be too stupid to look at comments. I've not escalated as we don't talk much but my wife's birthday is soon so he'll probably ring and I'll address it. That's only the start of the family shit I have related to this issue.

I really hope we as a nation don't fuck this up.

We probably will. And it will probably not matter in the long run... Humans have been screwing over other groups of humans since day dot and I doubt that will change.

I don't think we will. This debate is giving off pretty strong vibes of how the marriage equality plebiscite was going in 2017 - acrimonious and increasingly ugly lead up then a result that was generally very positive. This might not have the same margins (or it might) but it will get across the line.

Thanks Eeyore

Just an observation of humanity's track record ;)

Just to add to this, anything that makes politicians have to justify their decisions is a good thing in my book.

I don't believe for a second that the voice will be a panacea for indigenous disadvantage, but it might just provide some clues into why we as a nation haven't been able to close the 'gap'.

It would certainly shine a light on some uncomfortable policy situations. A number of pollies would prefer to keep that well tucked away in a dark corner.

I see the voice as the first long overdue step in getting some proper balance. The treaty is a whole new discussion and I don't think that will ever get up regardless of what it says. Too much time has passed and there will always be the whole apology for ancestors issue. Better to legislate what a treaty should say and tge voice gets the ball rolling. As @Scotty T said there are no cons (as far as I can tell) and plenty of positives.

Let's see how far this goes. She certainly needs more than just suspension without pay.

But their might be a couple of people above her who are also due some retribution.

^ this is all very consistent with a culture of fear that was fostered in the APS. It was clear that frank and fearless advice was not required.
